The Zwentendorf Nuclear Power Plant, located on the bank of the Danube River, about 20 miles northwest of Vienna, is Austria’s only nuclear power plant. It was completed in 1978, loaded with fuel, and ready to start up. But then, the country decided that it didn’t trust nuclear energy anymore, and the project was mothballed. It is the only completely finished nuclear reactor that never went online.

Eish, at 692 MW design power could have generated about 182000GWh of electricty in a 40yr lifespan at a lowish 75% capacity factor preventing about 76million tons of CO2 if they replaced capacity by burning gas, or near double that if they used coal. And the referendum for not switching on was won by 50.47% against 49.53% of the votes cast.

The Ceremony of the Keys. The ceremonial locking of the Tower of London that houses the Crown Jewels. Said to be the oldest military ceremony in the world it has been performed daily without interruption for the past 700 years.
