A 9-Gigapixel Image of the Milky Way Contains 84 Million Stars

This striking view of the central parts of the Milky Way has been obtained using the VISTA survey telescope at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile. It’s part of a huge picture (108,200 x 81,500 pixels) which contains nearly nearly nine billion pixels.

    Name: download.png
Views: 563
Size: 1.90 MB

To create this unprecedented view of the Milky Way, ESO combined thousands of individual images from VISTA, taken through three different infrared filters, into a single monumental mosaic.

These data form part of the VVV public survey and have been used to study a much larger number of individual stars in the central parts of the Milky Way than ever before.

Because VISTA has a camera sensitive to infrared light it can see through much of the dust blocking the view for optical telescopes.

Whether its wind and water on land or stellar winds in space, erosion is a powerful force.
In the southwestern part of the United States, erosion has shaped regal sandstone structures over millions of years. 20,000 light-years away in Westerlund 2, the dark pillars are reserves of dense gas that protect (and hide) new stars as they form over about a million years.

Astronomers assumed that galaxies and dark matter go together. You typically don’t have one without the other.

But researchers using the Hubble Space Telescope now say that new measurements of an oddball galaxy helps them confirm that it mysteriously lacks the dark stuff. Dark matter is an invisible substance that makes up the bulk of our universe and the glue that holds visible matter—stars and gas—together in galaxies.

The research team first uncovered the galaxy in 2018. Its stars are so spread out that it looks like a giant cotton ball. The confirmation challenges the standard ideas of how researchers think galaxies work.
