In the rural areas here that have butcheries, brisket, shortrib and blade are the main cuts on sale for the permanent braais on the premises. Usually cut thin so one must braai quickly.

These daytime braais are usually shared by two or three people: you are given an ugqoko ( a wooden "plate" or serving dish) with a heap of coarse salt and cut chillis in one corner and a loaf of bread with a sharp knife. The cuts of meat are braaied, put on a heap in the ugqoko and is then cut into random pieces, from the loaf one grabs a chunk of, wrap around a piece of meat, dip in the salt and then chillis and chow.

And now the mouth, that is stuck here in the office, runs with saliva....

When I was younger, while playing with friends from the community, I was invited many times to share a meal with them. Some of the best memories of my life.

Difficult to describe this day, called by the school, your boy is en route to hospital emergency room . He seems fine now .

After long day still at hospital it is take-away time, but with a difference, not the normal stuff. For me eishbein, mash and veggies. SWAMBO is spoiled with a delicious pasta dish, 150g sirloin with creamy mushroom and brandy souce. It was really good.

    Whilst waiting...

The Blonde doing " qoba inyama" which means cutting into pieces.
Ideally everyone should sit around the bowl and eat with their hands, this is more about sharing a meal with mates than what was braaied as beef liver can also be done in the same fashion.

Samesyn in Afrikaans, is a descriptive word for this.

Lekker Dudley, the dhanya is an interesting addition to the tuna.

With the torrential downpour we had here last night I was also forced inside, cooking responsibilities I delegated to the wimmin folk.

Huddled under the makeshift umbrella, the Cobb is started and the Captain is warding off the chill. Old standby tonight, sweet marinated flattie and salad. Not going to sit in the house again tonight and growl at the walls.

Riaan on the roll, expecting nothing less

Family at home again , braai time, but my priorities are screwed, no Captain or wood . Eish cannot remember the last time I had to use the back-in-closet backup Shonna Namibian charcoal . Don’t feel like cleaning the Cobb tonight with the marinated chicken

Tonight is Prego flatty, stirrfry veg and baked potato. SWAMBO is spoiled with a 2007 Groenland Shiraz after almost no sleep for 3 night in hospital.

I think the Hilux will find itself on a joyride to Warmbath’s vicinity on Saturday to buy around 100 bags of wood, it is damn expensive in Pretoria.
