Default Searching For Campsites,Backpackers,Places Of Interest, Mountain Passes And Eateries

Hi Gerhard,we were on our way to Maphelane towing the Echo and I actually heard the bearing let go, but we were in a dangerous part of the N2,so we tried to get to a safe area.I literally had to try and keep some momentum whilst listening to the engine destroying itself....very sad, but a modern day reality....an engine can be replaced, but lives not. I think the damage was probably exacerbated by the fact that we were towing and 35 degree heat.

The motor has done 325k , and has a new head, injectors and turbo internals, so I was hoping to get another 100k out of it.....

Markus, Maphelane is indeed a special place, made even more special when shared with great company like yourselves.

I think you deserve a medal for still going after the car trouble.

As far as the state of the Pathy goes, not good news Iím afraid....the motor is trashed, but I have managed to find a replacement motor from a forum member that does Lexus conversions.....the head is toast though, so we will use the head off my engine if it is serviceable, and then the Pathy will be sold. It is my daily drive, and it doesnít make sense to do 6000km plus a month alone in a big vehicle. Will get something more economical to use for work, and hopefully get a proper trail weapon later in the year....unless I can twist a certain blondeís arm to get a boat. Will use SWAMBOís Pathy to tow the Echo for our camping trips and weekends away .

Ok.....so as promised, herewith the trip report of our Mozambique trip in December and January....I know that some of you may say that it is not 4x4 related....but....I beg to differ....with the exception of Ibu Island, all these destinations can be reached by what passes for roads, in Mozambique.

Flights from Durban out of the way, it was onto a LAM flight to Pemba via Maputo....if you look closely at the pics of Maputo bay, you will note that the much vaunted bridge is almost completed, which I am told will take hours off the trip from Ponta.

After a confusing transfer from international to domestic at Maputo airport, it was off on the 2 hour flight to Pemba.

The arrival at a blisteringly hot Pemba was rather sobering, with lots of camo/AK47 ensembles.....luggage delayed due to some freight having to be offloaded into armored vehicles....possibly the reason for the aforementioned ensembles.

First stop was the scenic Nautilus Hotel, with beautiful sea views and damn good Portuguese food....a seafood platter for the princely sum of 180 Ronts, and a Peri Peri chicken that was SO tasty, but oh so fiery....made my ears ring.

As the wind was howling, making the trip to board unpleasant, the decision was made for Shumwari to sail around the bay and meet us in the sheltered waters of Wilsonís Wharf in the harbor.....yes Pemba also has a Wilsonís Wharf, both established and named after the same person. The bay that the harbor is situated in is enormous....being the third largest deep water bay in the world, and in places you cannot see the other side, even on a clear day.

A couple of days were spent chilling and getting the necessities such as diesel and provisions on board, which included our first storm, which was sobering to say the least. Here we also encountered the first of many incredible sunsets, and afternoon lighting that would make any photographer proud.....Riaan, you would have loved it.

First stop was a short cruise over the bay to Arti Lodge, very ably run by Riaan and his wife with their ever friendly staff. The diving and snorkeling around Arti was excellent with huge expanses of coral and an amazing array of fish species.....a glimpse of a white tip reef shark did lead to me doing my best F1 powerboat impression, followed by a vault out of the water and back into the boat that would have made a gymnast proud.

Riaan informed us that Arti can at times be arid during the dry season, it was beautifully green while we were there, and to this end, the entire Lodge is decorated with many different gardens consisting of shells, coral, whale bones and anything else they could lay their hands on.

Sitting sipping sundowners on the bow one evening, watching another glorious sunset brought me to the conclusion that us city folk, are just not used to uninterrupted horizons, making the scenery even more special. The fact that most of the coastline that we visited was incredibly flat, made the horizons stretch forever

The next couple of days were spent cruising through the Quirimbas Archipelago to our furthest stop which would be Ibo Island. Days filled with meals made with fresh fish and calamari bought from the dhow fisherman, fishing, partying and taking in the incredible sights of the islands.

Unfortunately the coastline and the fishing gods were not very kind to us, with a solitary Dorado being the only spoils. The fresh sushi and wasabi basted fillets on the braai were legendary though.

Ibo Island can only be described as being stuck in a Portuguese Colonial time warp, with forts dating back to 1817, and an island population that still survives through subsistence fishing. Ibo Island Lodge has some beautiful period pieces of furniture and decor.

We were fortunate to be invited for a traditional meal in the fishing village, which was both simple and extremely tasty. If you are ever on the island, the mango ice cream is a must. There are also a few traditional silversmiths on the island, and their wares are truly exquisite.....and very reasonably priced.

You may note that we photographed numerous sunsets whilst at Ibo as the afternoon light was just awe inspiring....herewith the pics in Part 2

Part 3. And so to the highlight of the trip. Situ Island Lodge is run by Tess and Craig MacDonald.....and what a pair of characters....Craig is a lifelong yachtie and a complete loon, that will keep you amused for the length of your stay. He is also the head chef, and his food has to be experienced to be believed. Tess is an extremely knowledgeable birder and diver, and can also be found snorkeling with her pup Nuisance sitting on her back.

We had two very experienced and well travelled divers with us, both confirming that the diving can be compared to the best they have seen, easily trumping places like the Maldives. Tess has a vast knowledge of all the best dive spots, and Iím told that diving with her is an experience. She also has a daily routine of feeding the the Moray eels that reside in the corals around the resort.

We left with many fond memories of Situ, including a memorable Crayfish Mornay sauce with tagliatelle pasta and some MoŽt for New Years.

What an experience you and Zelda had, I'd be lying if say I wasn't envious when I heard of the planned trip, the stunning pics confirms my initial feelings then. Thank you for sharing Markus.

Ibo island looks like a treasure trove for photography!

Steampunk Coffee just past Midmar Dam on the way to Lions River....GREAT coffee and atmosphere....good stop if you happen to be cycling by. An interesting collection on vintage cars spotted there on Sunday.
