I am buying a 3year 50000km + 2 year warranty. Will that sway any opinion?
    Which warranty you getting?

The way to judge (in my opinion), is ask for a full cover list, see what cover they offer on total engine failure, and use that as a comparison.
Make sure to also get a quote on the Innovations SuperDrive product, I can refer you if you need a dealer for that.

I am experiencing a big difference between city and long distance. Open road, about 9.5km/l, and up to 10.5 if I stick to below 115km/h.

City driving on the other hand 6km/l, and some tanks even less than that. (Note though, my vehicle is also a response vehicle, so there are times where I am not driving it fuel economically, two call outs on a tank and the average drops to 5.5 or so.)

The other problem is that my typical city driving is stop start the whole time, plus the D3 is lifted, with roofrack and slightly bigger tyres (265/75R17)

I would love a V8, but would hate to fuel it with a heavy foot!

Ignoring that is your own choice.

All things being equal, a D4 V8 will last longer and cost less.
All depends on the warranty as well. IF I did not have a warranty this statement would have been true, excluding the massive cost with engine repair my warranty had spent at least another R50k I guess on other things in the past 4 years.

The incidences of broken cranks also seem to be quite a bit less than on the D3.
Since the one you're looking at is a 2010, you'll be quickly out of that cover window from LR.
An after market warranty will not cover all the repairs if the crank goes. Read the fine prints there.

Do you have substantial info in this regard?
I need to get Goodwill from Land Rover because of a snapped crank.(2010 D4 HSE)

Not many 7 year old D3 or D4's around with a full dealership service history.

when it comes to Disco 3/4s hang on a couple of months, the advent of the Disco 5 means the prices will drop dramatically in the near future.

and as mentioned. get a V8...
