Default [Video Link] : Johannesburg to Pakistan-China Border in a Land Cruiser [2015 to 2016]

    About us: (from http://thekhanplayground.co.za/about/)

We are Farhaan and Khairunnisa Khan from South Africa. We both love travelling and had travelled a lot by road in an around South Africa. But we had a dream of doing something big… of making travel our life and the world our playground. For many years we kept the dream alive by talking about it, saving up for it and creating a list of places we would like to visit. Then in 2013 by the grace of God, we were able to make this dream a reality.

After a year and a half of planning and preparation, we quit our jobs and on 1 March 2015 started to live the dream – #Joburg2Jerusalem and beyond. We were blessed to be able to visit the 3 Harams and spend Ramadan 2015 in Al-Quds / Jerusalem.

The furthest point that we drove to was the Pakistan-China Border.

We drove through 16 countries, travelled a total of 37000 kms, made amazing friends, experienced the most powerful forces of nature in Pakistan, witnessed the endless plains of the Serengeti, prayed the Jumma prayers with thousands of Palestinians at Masjid Al-Aqsa, were left in awe at the Ngorongo Crater, felt tiny in front of the Great Rift Valley in Kenya, took a ferry over the Red Sea, wild camped amongst the Kaluts of Dasht-e-Lut in Iran, were forced to stay in our car for 2 days during rain in Turkey, slept amongst the Caucuses Mountains in Georgia, drove above the clouds in Armenia, drove in snow for the first time in Azad Kashmir and left a part of us in every place we visited.

We arrived back in South Africa on May 16, 2016, after 14 months on the road. But our heart still remains out there and the dream has only grown bigger.

    Enjoy

What an incredible journey - both physical and spiritual. Congratulations!

I would like to know more about the route. There is a big gap in your blog between Tanzania and the Middle East. I presume you shipped the vehicle from Port Sudan into Saudi Arabia, but were you allowed to drive a right hand drive vehicle there? Then did you go Saudi-Jordan-Israel - and then shipped from Israel to Turkey?

Thanks for posting about your awesome adventures.

    Hi Wazungu,

    thanks :-)

We still have a lot info to add to the website. But yes you have got it right.

    Africa
South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan.

    Middle East
There is a ferry that runs 3 times a week between the port of Suakein and Jeddah. Both passenger and vehicles can be transported. We got our first big hiccup in Saudi. We were not allowed to drive the car at all. Had to leave it at the port and find a truck to take it to Jordan - which was no easy task but we met a Pakistani guy working at the customs office who was extremely helpful.

We got the car in Aqaba (eventually) and then drove to Jerusalem.

We then shipped it on a Ro-Ro from Ashdod to Istanbul.

    Europe/Asia
the AA of South Africa does not validate a Carnet for Iran, so we had to do it through an Iranian guy but we had to enter from Armenia.

So the route became: Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Pakistan.

Hope this makes it much clearer

Could you maybe explain why they would not let you drive in Saudi - would it be possible to do the reverse or from Jeddah to Port Sudan.

    Thank you

Can't wait to get some wifi to view the video! We were at the China Kyrgyzstan border in 2014. An unforgettable Journey for us, and undoubtedly for you! Hope you're settling back well... we, in the meantime, couldn't give up, and are now embarking on Africa.
Thanks for the video in advance!

Hey Wild Life - In Saudi it is absolutely prohibited to drive a right hand drive (RHD) car. The only way to get across the country if you are driving a RHD, is if you organise a truck to transport it from one side to the other. If you drive an LHD, its no problem to drive across the country on a transit visa. So basically, doesn't matter point of entry, Saudi won't allow a RHD on their roads.

    Hope this helps!
