    Default Anti Smash and Grab?

This morning I was driving around in my fortuner.

All of a sudden "Bang!!!". In afrikaans, ek het my gat af geskrik.

My left front passenger window was totally shattered. My first thought was that it might have been a defective window because it just seemed so random... But on closer inspection it looked like a small stone hit it. There were some guys on the side of the road with weadeaters thinking back.

Anyway the mechanics of tempered grass shattering is simple. However I was under the impression the anti smash and grab is there to make it a bit more difficult for vehicle intrusion?

Basically a very light nudge to the window made everything fall out. No effort at all. The only thing it seems to do well is keep all the glass together. In which case they should rather the rename to "shatterproofing"...

Anyway I drove to my Toyota garage and was surprised that they quoted me only R600 for a new one.

Did you have the windows tinted or was it only the laminated glass? Think laminated glass is more of a safety thing and not for security. You should tint with smash and grab for security.

Hmmm, I'm not sure. There is a slight tint to the windows.

Although the vehicle invoice says "anti smash and grab".

Sorry Pieter, Iím not really sure. I didnít really researched it when I bought. I was more interested in the car

But I now see that there are a whole lot of different product options to choose from.

So Iím definitely going to ask them tomorrow when I get the replacement window.

I had smash and grab fitted to my D4 windows, not sure what thickness. Found out it was quite thick but did not stop them with a spark plug and a Stanley knife. Great thing about it is that it keeps all the glass together, none falls on the ground so robbing a car is easy and quiet. Lost R55k worth of camera gear.

Will be interesting to get feedback regarding the type (brand and thickness) where the anti-smash and grab did not stop the windows from breaking or where a light press on it broke it.

I have 100 micron on the D3 and years ago somebody tried to get into it by using the spark plug and push out method; however they were unsuccessful - the window did not even move an inch. They pushed so hard on the window to get it out that the finger print specialist did not even have to use his powder to lift the finger prints.

The Range Rover is fitted with 200 micron - thankfully thus far not yet tested, but should be stronger than the 100micron

I have a friend who went through the windscreen of a car, very unpleasant because the windscreen has plastic laminates inside that hold it together. Side windows are meant to shatter into small roundish pieces, not long shards like house glass. In a crash, it is fairly common to hit the window with your arm and head. I would prefer a shower of glass chunks rather than putting my head through a plastic sheet impregnated with glas. Losing your expensive belongings makes anyone angry but perhaps we should all pack more carefully, hiding valuables at the bottom and let the window do what it was designed to do ?

Smash and grab in areas where no one sits ie canopy are probably a good idea.

My wife's Nissan Micra's left front window was also destroyed at a traffic light in Rockys Drift between White River and Nelspruit. There were some people cutting grass around a fibre glass pool displayed about 10 meters from the road.

Could have been a small stone as well, nobody tried to steal anything.

Unfortunately this side window was pricy, R2850!

windscreens are laminated glass - 2 pieces of glass with a bonding layer in between.

because it's attached all around the edges, it's hard to break through the plastic.

side and rear windows are tempered glass - single layer (except in high end vehicles which often have double glazed windows)

one smack and they shatter into a million little diamonds....

the smash and grab keeps it all together and prevents that 'grab' as the window isn't open - good for at robots and where you are in the car as the few seconds it takes someone to pull it out of the frame give you some reaction time.

but yes, in a parking lot it's pretty useless as you just break it and pull it aside.

Not really...think why a spark plug is used. Using a blunt object wrapped in cloth is plain stupid

Smash and Grab can't be used on Windscreens.

Sheesh, I was lucky. Barlowworld Menlyn charged me R630 rand for a new one. Incl new " anti smash and grab".

So at the end of the day, just a minor inconvenience.

Thumbs up Re: Anti Smash and Grab?

Lotza options although the choice lies with what protection ultimately you want to have.

I currently have Llumar 100 Micron 35% fitted on my 2 sedans and my SUV has 50% non Llumar fitted (goed koop is duur koop).

Overall the anti smash-n-grab is meant to hold the glass together and not fall off for the attacker to jump and easily gain entry to the vehicle. It's just a deterrent mechanism.

Have a look at this: https://youtu.be/jfu966IgZOQ
Company is called Klingshield and went to their site for a demo. Needless to sayI am saving to do fitment on my Everest and the Kia Rio.

I was meaning that smash and grab effectively turns your side windows into a plastic sheet with glass shards imbeded in it. It is quite common to hit the side windows with your head or arm and they are designed to shatter into pieces. Now if you hold those pieces together and smash an arm or head through them ?
