Default 2000 XJ 2.5 TD - common issues?

Hi all, new to this forum.

So my dad is picking up a really neat 2000 XJ 2.5 TD this week. It is ultimately going to be a project car with a motor swap planned for the future for a bit of fun (most likely 1UZ), but I just wanted to find out what common issues these cars have? This is new territory for us so we aren't 100% sure what to expect, but I guess that is part of the fun of this project.

Any help and guidance would be much appreciated!

    Cheers
    Jason

Main issue: that darn early VM Motori engine; great that you're getting rid of it! Other common problem is centre portion of rear diff (lsd) goes bad on that sub-par Dana 35 axle. Don't drive it enthusiastically on a wet road - or any road with something that resembles curves and undulations. Have fun!

Unless there are phodies as proof, this did not happen! Then! A Jeep is not a car! A Jeep, Is a Jeep, Is a Jeep!

Are you going to keep it manual or make it auto?
If auto, I would start with an auto XJ.

Otherwise cooling system will have to be seriously looked at. And gearing (diffs) might be out too.

Too bad you're going the appliance route, but that's really up to you in the end.

Good luck, and keep us posted with the whole process, I find it interesting 8)
