The view of the Mbizo river from the campsite is just something else. Especially when the rising sun casts it's welcoming rays onto the hilltops first.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll give it a bash with the Slipstream and let you know how it goes.

For me the biggest challenge will be the road leading from Louwsburg to the gate. Narrow, steepish. Road surface was quite good Sep 2017 when we visited.

Haven't been there for ages, but the major challenge would be the steepness of the hill down from Louwsberg.

"Technically", it should be easy to get down the road to the gate, and along the good gravel road to Doornkraal with a small caravan. But there is a sign at the top of the road that indicates NO CARAVANS..., that's the problem I believe...

I would be careful going down on the 4x4 section with the low clearance on the slip stream.
The longer route should be fine.

The down hill section is not to bad, as Peter said use the gears not the brakes and take it slowly.
We took the Echo 4 down a few times and you could feel it braking going down.
I keep in second gear at low revs and apply brakes in short burst.

Unsure if the slipstream are braked, just take it very slow.

    Enjoy the time.

Has anyone been to the campsite recently?

We have booked three nights at the campsite over the Easter Weekend next month and will be towing our Jurgens Oryx. Hopefully road access conditions are still fine and that the campsite is still as good as was reported previously in this thread.

That's odd, because I've just made my booking over the phone at the booking office in PMB and they made no mention of it being closed until end of April.

Where did you find out that they were closed?

I received an email from them about 2 weeks ago.

Ya, that's a bit uncalled for. There is nothing wrong with disappearing to the bush for a few days during this time. It's probably the safest thing to do.

Ithala SHOULD be open for business again. Best to phone reservations and find out. It was going to be closed because government considered it as an option to house quarantine patients. It was however NOT selected, so not sure why it isn't back to business as usual.

We booked beginning of Feb for 26-29 March. 9 March I received email above.

Cancelled booking and waiting for refund.

Already made plans to go to 3 Provinces now for the same weekend but Ithala was 1st prize. Too late to change now.

Not to worry - you will enjoy three provinces especially if you have not been there before.
Keep Ithala for the next time - a magic little campsite indeed and then there is the game park and the Bivane 4x4 track ....

thanks Peter - also been wanting to go to 3 Provinces, so it won't be a waste, but Erika has limited time before starting a new job, so not sure when we can do Ithala again. Was really looking forward to the game especially. I guess 4x4 trails it will have to be. Darn.
