    Default Ithala Doornkraal Campsite

We are planning to visit Ithala Game reserve. In their website it says "No caravans allowed" and apparently it is because of bad roads and I do it at my own risk. We plan to go there with the Imagine. Can it be done safely with a off-road caravan? I am not keen to do obstacle course roads with the caravan in tow.

Been there with my Companion, no problem. "No caravans allowed" they refer to normal road caravans.

We were there the weekend with a Companion. No problems at all. The roads have been washed away a bit from the recent rains, but still no problem.
    Bivane river is flowing nicely.
    Beautiful place.

Ithala is a wonderful unfenced campsite ...great drives in the reserve...was there last year for 2 nights on way to St Lucia...take at least 3 nights...the roads are not the worst...definitely OK for trailer or Off Road Van ...the site is next to a river which had lots of Elephant activity....

ithala is an absolute gem of a reserve!-

Doornkraal a brilliant rustic open camp ( with a quirky open shower plumbing setup!)-one of the last few you will find around.

As said-elephants -and leopard- in the river bed where one can dip in the rapids at the right time!

Two routes to get to Doornkraal, so if the 4x4 route is washed out, the longer main game drive route will be fine for the offroad caravan.

The Bivane trail to the Pongola confluence is a great 1/2 day route.-(watch for crocs there!)

    Enjoy!

I have always eyed Ithala as a stop over to Sodwana. Will give it a go some time

    I fully agree.
We spent a few nights there about 2 years back and also did the Bivane 4x4 route - well worth it. (Permit is bought at reception)

Thanks for the heads-up guys. I have heard that it is a stunning place but never had the opportunity to visit. Was lucky enough to get the last spot for next weekend.

Go read thread http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/...ead.php/227381 from #17,this was our experience at Ithala.

We really enjoyed the stay and it is a lace to visit again and again.

We camped with the Echo 4, no issues in and out.
    Road caravan, NO GO.

We love Ithala. Road Caravans will not be allowed due to road conditions. Offroad caravan should do just fine. Just take it slow from Louwsburg down to the entry gate. Road has lots of turns and sometimes trucks/taxis or a bus can leave you little space.

Many have burnt out brakes on that short stretch of road especially if towing.
Use low gear and engine compression to help.

Agree with Peter. It's the hill down from Louwsberg that is a permanent killer because it's so steep and windy. Depending on how recently it has rained, the dirt roads further on could also be challenging!

But it is a really lovely and special place with amazing and diverse ecosystems.

Just check with reception - they don't seem to promote it much.
I can't remember if we got any pensioner discount or not - but ALWAYS worth asking, they can only say "NO" and then you're no worse off than before.
We always go out of season though.
