Default What is the plan with Harties

I was at Harties over the weekend and took these pics, scary how the dam looks.

Does anybody know what the plan is here, I know there was a plan at some point to clean the dam but currently nothing seems to be done.

there was a plan in place and it was working fairly well. however in typical fashion the grant for the person who was running it wasnt renewed so it collapsed.

There was a meeting last week by a private individual to try and get something going again but i dont know how it went.

there is currently another private individual who is removing the hyacinth somewhere down by magalies park.

With the amount of sewage going in to the dam it is not surprising. All the up market and hi class developments has turned it in to a case of the affluent living with the effluent

Cas Kruger presented a solution to DWA and as usual because he isn't BBBEE and AA they ignored him.

So basically nothing will be done.

Without the hyacinth sucking up the excess Nitrate from the amount of raw sewage flowing into Harties, the dam would be in a much worse condition.
If Government wasn't so obtuse, it would be ideal to start up a small bio-fuel energy plant which can be run by harvesting the Hyancinth on both Harties and nearby Roodekoppies.

Wiping your nose does not cure your cold.

The problem is not with Harties (Harties is the result / symptom / running nose).
The problem is with the effluent from upstream sewage purification works (that's the cold / influenza).

The cure is to tighten down on the purification works (especially Johannesburg) and ensure that they remove the nitrates and phosphates, which cause the problem.
It can be done, but costs money, which is spent on black SUVs with blue lights!

U S purification works are part of he problem but another huge problem is the amount of raw sewage going in to streams and creeks that find its way in to the dam. DA has been in power for way more than 100 days and only the high profile and sensational fraud cases have had some attention. Promises about things like leaking sewage ........ how long before the next .......... Why worry the rain has flushed and diluted it so the big out cry is over for now

    partially right

the problem is also the illegal settlements on the banks of all the confluent rivers involved that flush their pit toilet feces into the rivers when it rains.

I think Cas Kruger proposed a natural compost system, but yes, if hyacinth can be used as biomass, then it's a plan.

A friend mentioned something about the people who are responsible for clearing it being on strike for a while now.

I agree though about treating the symptoms and not the cause

Last I heard is that the residents of Harties will contribute to a fund and have a private contractor clean it up. I don't know what process he will be using, but hopefully not poison.

The only way to fix the dams is to stop the pollution in the rivers feeding the dams. We know that will never happen.

They are clearing the symptom, the sewerage entering the dam is the root cause, what is being about that?

Well this is a good start. The best way to deal with the rest is to vote for DA to manage RSA

The way I read it that effort is a proof of concept demonstrator to illustrate how it could be done. The purpose of that is to raise funds.

I wonder if somebody has thought about the logistics of voluntarily moving a thousand tons of hyacinth a day.

Hardly likely to be able to reach the middle with anything I can think of. Was there Tuesday and 2 chaps from Water were doing tests on the wall but not sure why? ( they were not sure...)

From what i understand there has been a fair amount of private effort going on to get to this stage. lets hope it continues.

There is an over supply of tipper transport in the area, not a problem to get them, only problem to pay them
