Garmin BaseCamp - Tips & Tricks

Following a previous thread that was hi-jacked, I thought it would be good to start a new thread dedicated to the use of BaseCamp. I am going to try this out and see how it works. My idea is that questions be posted here and our good Forum members post answers/suggestions as always. I hope that I am not putting my head into a bees nest and that this will be helpful.

To make the thread easier to navigate, I am going to try and keep/update an index on this 1st post. If anyone needs an answer, you should then be able to go to the 1st post to see if the question was discussed before. From here you will get a pointer to the post number related to your question (Displayed in curly brackets). How to change the display color of multiple track logs at the same time:

Select the track logs for which you want to change the display color. If you click on the 1st one and then press Ctrl+A, it will select all in that folder/list. If you select the 1st one, hold down the Shift key and then select another one further down, it will select everything in between. If you select the 1st one and then select several individual ones while holding down the Ctrl key, only the ones you clicked on will become part of your selection.

After selecting the relevant track logs, right click on your selection and click on Open from the drop-down list. This will take you to a window where you can change the display color of all selected track logs.

Use of Filter Button
At the bottom of your data view, there is a filter button. If you select this button you are able to display only one type of data i.e. tracks, routes, waypoints, etc.
After selecting the filter button just click on the icon below for the data that you want to display. Referring to post 3 where you want to change the color of all tracks in a list, it is useful to filter only tracks. You can then use the Select All function (Ctrl+A) to select all tracks.

Create WayPiont from Coordinates:

Press 'Ctrl' + 'T'.

The "ReCenter Map" will pop up.

Enter your co-ordinates and click "Create Waypoint"

Done!

Join tracks:

Individual tracks can be joined together to form one track.

Select the track logs that you want to join. If you click on the 1st one and then press Ctrl+A, it will select all in that folder/list. If you select the 1st one, hold down the Shift key and then select another one further down, it will select everything in between. After selecting the relevant track logs, right click on your selection and click on Open from the drop-down list. This will take you to a window where you can select to join the selected track logs.

From here you will be taken to a window where you can change the order of the logs. If you are happy with the order, click on OK. BaseCamp will then give you the option to either keep or delete the original tracks. Make your selection.

Tip:

1. Each track log has a starting and an ending point. If you join track 1 and 2 and the end point of 1 and the start point of 2 are not close to each other, they will be joined with a straight line between these points.
2. You can change the direction of a track. Right Click on the relevant track and select "Invert Selected track" from the drop-down list.

Great, thanks. By going to "Position Options", you can change the co-ordinate format.

'My Collection" contains all the waypoints I have ever used. When I am planning a new trip,I work on the map and pick the next point, say Bloudrom (just to give it a name). Right Click - New Waypoint. It appears on my working folder, but it is called Bloudrom 2, because I used Bloudrom as a waypoint on my trip two years ago. If I carry on like this,the list will be filled with duplications.

How should one deal with this? I have tried going through the My Collection master list before starting, guessing which Waypoints I am going to re-use, and copying them into the new subfolder, but this is incredibly laborious. Ditto with ' before I click on Bloudrom, let me check if I have used it before by searching the Master List.

If you zoom into the area that you want to work on, with "My Collection" selected, you will see all your previously created waypoints on the map. When you left click on the waypoint (on the map), your selection will be highlighted in your collections. You can then drag it to your new list where it will be available without duplicating it by adding a 2 or 3 etc. The other method is to (on the map) right click on the waypoint and then choose "Send to" from the drop-down list. You can then choose the list where you want to copy it to.

This will stop the duplications in BaseCamp. However, I have noticed that when I transfer this data via routes created or the waypoints themselves, they get duplicated on the GPS similar to what you described. I have not investigated this yet.

View in Google Earth Problems:

From BaseCamp one can select items in your collection and then view them in Google Earth. This function is found under the view menu item. Between the upgrade to Google earth Pro and Windows 10 it happens that one are unable to go to the Google Earth from within BaseCamp. For a time it seems as if it works if you have Google Earth open already before selecting it from the View menu in BaseCamp. From Google it seems as if other users encountered the problem from versions earlier than Win 10. In the pictures I have added, I did the example from a Win 10 PC.If you encounter this problem, the following steps should help you to solve the problem. For those who want to go to the web site were the solution was found, it can be found here: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread...101#post783101. Otherwise the following sequence of pictures should help those who are not to familiar with the process.Pictures 1-2, basically help you to get the exact path where the Google Earth executable file is.From here you will open the command prompt in order to run the command that should solve the problem. The details for this can be found in pictures 3-4. Please make sure that the double quotes are typed as in the example.

IT SEEMS AS IF THERE IS A NEW PROBLEM WITH VIEWING ITEMS FROM BASECAMP IN GOOGLE EARTH. MINE STILL WORKED FINE LAST WEEK. HOWEVER, TODAY (16/02/2018 ) I DISCOVERED THAT IT DOES NOT WORK ANYMORE. I STUMBLED ACROSS THIS GARMIN SUPPORT PAGE STATING THE PROBLEM AND SAYING THAT ONE CANNOT SELECT VIEW IN GOOGLE EARTH FROM BASECAMP ANY MORE. THE WORK AROUND IS TO EXPORT YOUR BASECAMP DATA TO A KML FILE AND THEN IMPORT IT INTO GOOGLE EARTH. I WILL ADD POSTS ON HOW TO DO THIS (Refer to post 63).

Again thanks for the information on 'bulk' recolouring the saved tracks and I even picked up on how to join them into one if needed. Care needed if old archive is on the same 'folder' as I inadvertently joined a track from Italy to one in Namibia. (The resultant straight line was most impressive.)
Not sure if this is the correct thread but I would now like to learn how to get from the displayed map on PC to a 'photograph' that I can use in reports and even in 'albums' of trip photos.

Like the ones shown above in our helpful tips.

Progress might have been alright once, but it has gone on too long.

Will have to go and check up on the print function. But the alternative is the print screen option or on Win 10 there is a snip tool that allows you to draw a block around the area you are interested in. This can then be saved as an jpeg.

If you use the print screen button on the keyboard, you can paste it into PowerPoint or Word. From there you can crop it to the picture you want. From here you can right click on the picture and choose the "Save as picture" option to save the picture for future use.

Let me know if I need to show this in more detail.

I seem to lack a print screen button or the ability to copy/paste.
I can print and print preview but the only way it seems to work is to actually print it.
I am on Windows 7. I can make a marquee around the area on screen but when I lift off it does not stay.
Grateful for any help.

Thanks Kobus for the link how to use the snip tool.

Below I will describe the use of the Print Screen button on your keyboard.

The image below will show the Print Screen button on a keyboard. The location of the key might differ slightly from keyboard to keyboard. By pressing this button, it will take a snapshot of your entire screen and save it to your clipboard. If you hold down the "Alt" key while pressing the "Prt Scr" button, it will take a snapshot of the active window.



After pressing "Prt Scr", open any Office application and paste the image from the clipboard. In the example below, I used the "Prt Scr" key by itself (without holding the "Alt" key). As I am using dual screens, it captured both screens. If I used the "Alt" key as described above, it would have copied only the one screen with the active BaseCamp window. I prefer to use PowerPoint for this, as can be seen in the image below.



Step 1 - With the image selected, select the "Format" option.
Step 2 - Then select the "Crop" icon. If you select the drop-down below the "Crop" icon, you will find more options to play around with crop.
Step 3 - Now you will have 8 grab handles that you can use to drag the highlighted area to cover the picture that you want to save.
Step 4 - After highlighting the area you want for your picture, click on the "Crop" icon again. If the picture does not come out the way you want it, you can go back to Step 2 and do the process again.
Step 5 - Right Click on your new picture and select the "Save as Picture" option. From here you can give your picture a name, choose the type of file i.e. JPG, PNG, etc. and choose the folder where you want to save the file.

The end result looks like this:
