So had dinner with our friends tonight who just got back from CKGR and Khutse...they were driving a stock standard VW Amarok and towing an offroad caravan...

The 2-spoor sand tracks were very heavy going as the middlemannetjie is high and they were ploughing all the time...grass VERY HIGH and had to clean out seeds from radiator - inspite of radiator net - regularly.

Mud and water cleared up mostly by the time they left...they drove the WESTERN road through to Khutse and report the road being heavily over-grown causing a lot of paintwork damage to the vehicles and caravan...thick heavy sand and avg fuel consumption went down to just over 3km per liter...

Another struggle was the fact that the Amarok is wider than the tracks so additional 'fighting' with the steering happened...

A lot of the campsites were very overgrown...in some instances they could not even see the braai areas due to this...

    Hope this helps a little...

    God bless!!

    Default Ckgr warning.

    Hi all
Just finished a 10 day trip to CKGR and it was wonderful, all roads traveled were fine apart from some deep ruts here and there. Seed nets recommend on a lot of stretches.
Drove many pans and routes, entered at Matswere, exit at Xade
    Regards Henk

That is the best news I have had, We arrive in a month with 3 other vehicles , most of us over 60 so not looking forward to a lot of spade work.
Looks like it should be dried out by then. Do we need to pack panga`s and can you buy firewood between Khana Rhino and Matswere gate ?

It is always handy to have 1 panga but I doubt will be needed. It may be wiser to take a branch-lopper rather as the tracks may be a little overgrown and scratch your vehicles (if that worries you).

There is plenty of good but expensive firewood at Khama so buy some there. There is often firewood for sale at Matswere Gate which is cheaper but sometimes they don't have. In the event you see any for sale along the road between the two stop and buy that.

Just to warn that there will probably be some more rain, sometimes into April but the worst should be over. I envy anyone going to CKGR after these rains. I think the park is going to be spectacular!

Saw all the cats as well as Giraffe, big herds of Gemsbok and Springbok and some Rooihartebees. Fresh evidence of elephant (!) - although we personally didn't actually see one. Stayed at Sunday Pan 4, had a young Leopard in our camp who took up residence (see pics). As exciting as it was, we had to discourage him on day three, as he/she was getting too close and familiar for our safety as well as those to come.

All roads were passable with some tricky, muddy parts. Rumours of vehicles stuck the previous week. With hindsight next year's trip will be later in the year with more visibility - we were extremely lucky to see as much as did.
Just back from CKGR. Also had a great trip. Went in at Xade and roads were as normal, deep sand tracks to the gate and very overgrown to Piper.
Pans at piper all in good shape with some hefty animals as a result of the grazing. Unable to circle the southern pan due to water and mud. Spent a week at Piper and then drove up to Deception for a week. Also had all the sittings of Cheetah, Leopard, Lion etc.
Road to Deception fine but one can see the signs of difficulties people had in late feb with all the rain.
Also drove the road to Kalahari Plains and that was also fine but very overgrown.
All images can be viewed on my FB page Mark Drysdale.
Anything you need to know on airings don't hesitate to contact me.
    Best wishes
    Enjoy your trip

You killing me Henk. That Kalahari looks delightfully green, what a spectacle. Look forward to the trip report.
