We are spending the week from the 1st to the 7th at Sunday pan, will give some feedback on the conditions when we return. I must admit I've never looked at the long range weather forecast so often as I'm doing now ! not that it will change anything !

    Hi all,
As promised here our short CKGR report:
Arrived via rakops-matswere 5 days ago. 75mm of rain the night before trip. Road from rakops ca95% under water 50-80cm high. Used 4 low no diff all the way. Inside CKGR entrance to deception muddy with deep tracks but manageable. Avoid under all circumstances entering leopard loop from the north!!! Many stuck there, we too. Spend a night in leopard pan and digging 1 afternoon and next morning before help arrived. Good to drive now just deception and Sunday pan not further south or west from passarge 1. Great to see the green Kalahari!!! Flowers all over!
Situation bit better now than 5 days ago. Good luck to all! We arrived Maun this afternoon and looking forward the rest of our trip!
    Regards Gina and Chris

Thanks Gina and Chris for your feed back. Sounds like conditions were tough!

I suppose one must surmise that Passarge 3, Phokoje and Piper routes had to be abandoned? It just shows that for those visiting CKGR in the wet that there is always a plan to be made.

I wonder if any can comment on using the direct, east-west, 58km cutline route under those wet conditions? By this I mean the dead-straight route between Kori Pan to near the Passarge waterhole. As far as I can recall this route is sand almost all the way without any mud. However I have not traveled it under such extreme conditions.

    Ref. To the cut line:
We drove it from the east till the Sunday turnoff. Easy no problem. But the guys who helped us adviced to avoid the most western point where the passarge, motopi and phukwe roads meet.

Hi Gina and Chris, thanks a lot for the input, see that you enjoyed it nevertheless!
As we are there from 20.03. I wonder how we can get safe from Phokoje to Passarge 2 avoiding the worst part of the route you mentioned. We come up from piper and are not sure if the guys at Xade Gate can give us the ridht advices. But we will enjoy it also in any case.

    Hi Gina and Chris,
Thank you very much for your report on the latest conditions.
According to your initial schedule, you were supposed to go to Phokoje and Piper.
Could you manag either of these?
How did you get to Kori?
    Regards,
    Hennie.

    Hi hennie
we canceled both phokoje and piper because no way to use the western part of the cut line and also not possible to go further south via deception. Kori was easy to reach via the eastern section of the cut line. Heavy rain yesterday on the road from maun to guma lagoon, but bright sun today.
Info from xomae group office maun yesterday: they will need another week to rebuild 3rd bridge.
    regards Gina

So Gina and Chris, do you think coming from the South from Phokoje anf driving to Passarge it would be better to make the detour through Kori and Sunday than going up the western trail throuigh Tau Pan?

Topi, I think I am correct in assuming you are going to be in CKGR in about 2 weeks time. Remember that things may have altered a lot by that time. The roads can drain well if there is not too much rain between now and then. The road towards the west of Passarge Valley can become very slippery if wet but also further south towards Phokoje. The western bypass or cutline road is sandy and will drain first but the devil will be in getting there from the south. The drive through Passarge Valley is far more attractive than the cutline road and if possible that is the route I would prefer. There are not many animals or scenery on the cutline as this goes through dune country with not much in the way of special grasses to attract game concentrations. You will just have to assess conditions when you get there. If in doubt take the cutline from Phokoje to the Sunday/Deception areas and then go round to Passarge.

Note that there is one confirmed cyclone about to hammer Madagascar, with another one building east of Reunion and likely to hit next Sunday, both of which (if they stay at cyclone level and don't downgrade) will bring more heavy rain to the interior of South Africa and Botswana. Worth keeping an eye on them.
