    Default Canvas Tents

    Hey guys,

Ordered this tent on bidorbuy and thought I'd share.

These are NOT Tentco or any other quality product, but it's cheap and nasty. Paid R1100 for it and for that kind of money you can't expect too much even when it says "canvas".

OK so the outside material is thin canvas with plastic sheet as an inner. Ground sheet is a bit thin to my liking and it might rain in at the side windows.

Other than that, I'm very happy about it with a price tag like that. It's a very good replacement if your in the market for a normal plastic tent (don't know what you call the material) but want something more rugged.

Shoprite has a spacious 6 man dome tent for just over R900 iirc.
I think the make is Bush Baby,
Ripstop nylon with very sturdy/thick fibreglass poles.
My son is rough on tents, and he is more than happy with his one.

The one thing i have learned over the years is to never skimp on your tent.
Not having a good nights sleep due to tent leaking water or the wind blowing the top
of the tent into your face becomes a big issue and determine
    ones mood the following morning.
Buy the best you can afford .

I will never ever buy a tent (or any expensive camping stuff for that matter) if I have not had the item in front of me to inspect with hands and eyes.

My feeling exactly. My own tent is a serious safe-as-houses number which will last longer than my Safari (or let me think about that one). These are more for guests coming to Malawi and I think a much better option than normal plastic stuff.

Took me a while to get over buying a tent online. I need 5 so got this one to first see what it's about.

I have bought a number of things of the Bush Baby brand. I must say they are all fit for purpose - which means exactly that.

If you camp once in a while, enjoy good quality for money, then this is it.

    Update:

I think the test came to an end now and I can safely say I will not buy another. I need 5 canvas tents of this size and very glad I didn't buy the other 4 before testing.

It did rain a lot the past few days but in Malawi it rains even more.

Tentco Junior Wanderer dome tent 2.5 x 2.5m is R3250 and weathered a couple of heavy rain storms and not a drop inside.

Tentco makes great tents. I just can't spend that price for 5 of them.

Thanks for warning us about this anyway Zakhil. Sometimes it is also good to know what NOT to buy.

I have a Coleman polyester dome tent that I have used extensively and lasted me well for 17 years until the my tent poles were stolen with my other camping stuff a few years ago, so maybe an option for irregular use? I know the Cape Union Mart polyester tents also got good reports.

I am also looking for a proper canvas tent now (Campmor/Howling Moon) with 1.9 meter or above height, but even in the classifieds they are not much cheaper than in the shops - and if they are they are too low!

    Good luck with your search.

I since contacted the resellers and they in turn contacted the manufacturer which is *forgot* who swears that it shouldn't leak. They are going to replace it and I'll test again. Will update.

    Hi,
Got myself and Swambo a Campmore Outdoor Overlander proper canvas tent and am most satisfied with it. Might be a bit pricey but good quality and should last a long time.
