Default Kgalagadi Video Trip Report September 2016

We recently returned from our trip to the KTP and Mabua - it was awesome!! A full trip report is still a way off, so meanwhile I am sharing the condensed “video” trip report by Mr Cheetah80. It’s only 2 minutes long and a worthwhile watch

The trip was 3 weeks long, and took place in September 2016. Places we camped at: Rooiputs, Urikaruus, Kalahari Tented Camp, Polentswa, Grotkoolk, Gharaghab, Nossob, Matopi and Mpaya.

And yes ... the lions in Mpaya did come to visit us again

... And we also saw many others this time, especially beautiful Kalahari males like this one near Urikaruus

Alison that is a truly professional video clip. I hope all visitors to this post have a look at it. Thanks for posting!

You stayed in all my favourite Kalahari camps and I am waiting in suspense for the full report and pics.

Beautiful!-very well shot and composed video! Makes me itch to return to the Kgalagadi.

(However-I must just add that leaving food/water out for animals is actually not allowed in reserves-and contributes to problematic animal/human interactions -specifically at camps -once animals begin to expect reward for visiting the game-viewers/camps. The matter has been discussed at length before on other threads.)

I believe with the equipment/skills the producers of the video clearly do have at their disposal here, their end result would be just as impressive if they were purely observers and cinematographers/photographers, and not tweakers of the natural abundance!

For filming we use a Canon 70D and 100-400MkII lens. Some wider shots with either a 15-85, 24-105 or GoPro Hero 3.
For still photos I mostly use a 1DX MkII with 200-400 lens.
We used beanbags in the vehicle. I used a normal molar beanbag for photography. Mr Cheetah80 mounts a Uniqball ballhead on his beanbag for filming as it helps keep the horizons straight and even all the time

Benro tripod was used sometimes ... also mounted in the Mpaya trashcan for long exposure night photography. Was the only place I figured I would not need to rescue it from the lion visitors (Eagle-eyed video watchers can see me setting up the camera in the trashcan - how glamorous!)

For little critter photography outside of the vehicle I either used a gimbal mounted on a skimmer or else a rolled up scarf.

We also had a little thingy for the GoPro that rotates, for timelapses - you set a timer on it and it rotates gradually with the go-pro mounted on top of it. Unfortunately it doesn't take the full weight of DSLR.
