with ECU and TCU and harness yes: it will still be a mission to install but better than reinventing a CANBUS system

Apparently a guy in Centurion has managed to mate the Lexus to the D3 gearbox, thus just the engine is non standard.

Standard diagnostics can be done on the car, LR for the body and just the engine on the Toyota software.

Still not my first choice but it might open some options.

Although Dan drives his own D3 with a Lexus V8 he fitted himself, he has not yet got around to doing the D4 conversion. I spoke to him last week. It's on his to do list.

Darron - do you know if the D3 is still rear wheel drive only?

    Hi

Dan says that he is busy during lockdown fitting the Lexus v8 to the original D3 gearbox. He then has to wait for a redesigned cambus module for the D4, he already has one for the D3. They build them in Russia. He says he does not know how long it will take due to the virus etc. So the D3 will be up and running soon in 4x4. I have asked him to send pics of the build.

Thanks Darron. Any idea what the cost of this conversion is sitting at the moment?

    Hi

I chatted to Dan. He said a full conversion will be approximately 100k give or take, dependent on the landed cost of the conversion canbus/ecu from Russia which makes sure all components talk to each other and ensures 4x4.

I mentioned that some people on the forum said you could buy a cheapie second hand D3 tdv6 for 75k. The catch is it will have a high mileage and the crank is a ticking time bomb. If you buy the D3 just for the engine then you are looking at 22k anyway to do the transplant, which puts you back at 100k anyway. (Obviously if your crank goes and you scrap your D3, you could take a chance and buy a high mileage runner and see how long it lasts)

The thing is with the Lexus conversion ( and I drove Dan's) the motor is bullet proof. No issues. Is it perfect? No. Is it original? No. Will it break a crank? No!

You pays yours monies and yous takes your chances.

As much as I have passionately wanted a D3 or 4 for years, I have dodged that bullet and hung onto my D2. I'm leaning towards a Defender but their prices are through the roof second hand. I do admit, every time a D3 or 4 passes me on the road, I look twice. Stunning, stunning truck.

If any of you have any more questions for Dan, I am happy to ask him for you.

    Would I buy a D3 or 4 Lexus conversion?

Mmmmmm.... being a purist ( I have a Landy tattoo) I would probably buy a V8, although they are not without their timing chain issues!

MikeBob can confirm, but if I recall, a new TDV6 sub with installation is also around R100k?

I also remember that amount being discussed. Problem is you are then still stuck with a TDV6 engine

The problem is that it is seldom just the sub... many times the turbo needs replacing, as well as the hpfp, injectors etc and so the bill climbs. I often hear of figures closer to 150k.
