    Default Advice Mabua/Kgalagadi Oct'17

    Hi all,

    I need some advice.

A group of us (4 couples) are planning to visit Mabua and KTP over October 2017. We planned to do Mabua pan 30 Sept - 3 Oct (3 nights), Matopi 3-4 Oct (1 night) and then Rooiputs 4,5,6 Oct (3 nights) and out at TR on the 7th.

We contacted NDM to assist us with bookings on 22 Sept, but they failed to do the bookings in time when DWNP opened the Oct bookings. Now, due to their tardiness, we have 3 nights at Monamodi, 1 night Matopi, but no accommodation for 4,5,6 Oct.

My wife booked 2 nights (7,8 Oct) at TR for when the rest of group departs back home and we stay longer, while we waited on the conformation of our booking request from NDM.

Now we sit with 3 nights with no accommodation in the park. Is it worthwhile to stay just outside the park 4,5,6 Oct and do the day visitor thing, or do we cancel everything and try for Apr'18?

I am very disappointed and would appreciate any advice.

    Thank in advance

Sorry to hear of your problem.

I was in the Park in October last year and it was really scorching - 50C with a hair drier wind.
The general view among the visitors was that it was really too hot to enjoy fully.
Something worth considering although weather patterns do vary. The hot weather did bring out the big cats in numbers - we saw well over 40 in a few days.

There is a a lodge just outside the gates which offers both camping and chalet accommodation.

Twee Rivieren although not the best campsite - it is congested - is ideally placed for game viewing as you have easy access to both the Nossob and Auob river beds

    Thank you Paul

Oct was the only month I could sort of get the group together...

Thanks for the suggestion for accommodation, looks like a very nice alternate!

Why don't you do the Polentswa trail? That takes 3 nights.

    Hi Vernon,

sorry to hear about your debacle...

Personally if I was you, I would do a cheap local trip rather and wait till you can get your bookings. First off, I think it will be SCORCHING that time of year and second off, maybe other could give you more detailed and accurate info, but from my personal experience on numerous visits, Monamodi is not a great pan. Personally if it were me, I wouldn't go one because of lack of accommodation and secondly the accommodation you do have is probably one of the worst pans to stay (PERSONAL OPINION).... please don't shoot me down fellow forumites...

Big rock in a bush. Just for laughs and giggles, contact DWNP yourself and see what is available.

October can be a scorcher but it is not necessary always the case.

The option for the Polentswa trail is a very good alternative if you can get the slot for the set dates.
Check with DWNP directly or give Tara (Botswana Footprints) a tinkle.

There are also a few private camps inside the park available, but I am sure you would have to upgrade your wallet.

Could you not head North after Nossob, towards Kaa and the camps there ?

    Good day Vernom

I am very sorry that someone did not do the job in the office, however I will ensure I do a follow up and pile pressure on DWNP to get your bookings, that's not how we work and I will keep on updating you.

We just came back from 7 days at Mabua. Very hot!! But, great sightings of lion in and around our camp. Visits by brown hyena. Just take lots of water and beer and stay in the shade during the heat of day. Great thing about Mabua is that you can sit at your campsite and the animals come to you. No need to drive around like in Kruger.

Look well therefore, to this day!

Vernon, have you considered Two Rivers? Not the prettiest campsite and sometimes defunct ablutions, but at least it's small and quiet.

    Hi Maile,

    Thank you for the reply.

I am not going to lie, I was very disappointed that we couldn't get the booking we wanted. We were looking forward to nights at Mabua Pan and Rooiputs. We are however still excited to spend the 4 nights in the park and still hoping on a cancellation at Mabua or Mpayathlutwa. (I have sent an email in this regard)

SWAMBO booked us at Molopo Lodge for the remainder of our holiday, so all good...

    Thank you for the feedback.

    Keep well

    Thanks!

I actually got to book there, only to find out my wife made other plans at Molopo Lodge...

Must say that DWNP was quick and helpful via email.

Molopo lodge is probably 50 - 60 km from TR where kgalagadi lodge is 5 km. If you plan to do day trips the latter is ideal. No problem with Molopo lodge, I stayed there once but prefer Kgalagadi lodge.
