The bearing/bearings? seized where the output shaft of the gearbox goes into the transfercase, this seized all the gears, luckily no damage to the main gears.
And then all the spider gears including the whole 3rd diff portion is damaged on the inside (no chims between the spider gears could be found )

That's what I can remember from the phone call.

They are going to replace what needs replacing, using a recon unit for the 3rd diff part, and all the seals and gaskets etc.
So it will be like new again

Removed and installed it myself and replaced the oil in both diffs and the gearbox.

Recon of the transfer case about R12k
    Oils R700
Labour was free but took almost 1day to remove and another day to install.

Not sure but I think it's 260000km of wear and tear, heavy offroad use, towing quite often and not enough maintenance, like regular oil changes and making sure oil level is correct.

I have three friends with 2012-2014 Puma Defenders. One (2.2) is on his 3rd gearbox (tows a lot) and another (2.4) on his 2nd. The other guy's only problem so far has been a blown turbo elbow (known problem recalled on some - I got him a silicone replacement).

The irony is that the cause of the gearbox/Xfer problem is the same that LR had when the R380 came out - lack of sufficient lubrication of the output shaft to Xfer case. Just like defective oil pumps, it seems LR manages to duplicate known problem areas even in completely new vehicle designs...?

Luckily no gearbox issues (touch wood)
But apparently in the 80s and early 90s land rover recomended ATF oil for the R380 but it was to thin, especially in our climate, they then changed it to some other fancy oil (can't recall the name)

I mixed 2l of ATF with 2l of EP90 and then used that to refill the gearbox, it's alot smoother and runs quite a bit cooler for longer (you can feel the heat difference in the cab)

I have always only used ATF and now using Valvoline Dextron 6 fully synthetic had the box opened to check at 360000 and was perfect inside, I change the oil every 40k

I always had the same opinion. I can't understand how they expect an ATF to work like an MTF. IMHO, BOT402/Castrol Syntrans should be the correct oil for a full synchro manual box.

Stealers also recommend long life oils in their axles and boxes: not necessarily the best option for people who want to do over 200,000kms on their rigs.

have had excellent results with 75W90 full synthetic eg Castrol Syntrans in the R380
have not tried in the dead of winter but smooth action and quiet running.
pretty sure temps are down as well but cannot quantify
