Along the Zululand coastline one finds the Acacia Karoo ( Sweet thorn) to be the most common of the family, they adapt well to growing in the nutrient poor sand. A very common specie in SA with the Zululand growth form differing a bit as the thorns can get very long. I seem to recall it was classified as a sub specie at one stage due to this.

The name is due to the very sweet smell of the small yellow, puffy ball flowers when in bloom.

Pic is from the Richards Bay harbour, with sweet thorn in the foreground and a coal tanker busy leaving for far far away places.

One of the biggest sweet thorn, thorn pairs I found at Cape Vidal as a laaitie - gives one an idea just how large they can get.

When in bloom, the Sweet thorn's fluffy, powder puff balls of yellow exudes a sweet fragrance which permeates the coastal forests where they grow.

With the acacias, in summer comes the incessant buzzing noise of the cicadas who are fond of these trees as hosts.

That is so cool. Amazing that the old remains intact. Even down to those spindly little legs. You would think it would get damaged as it squirms to get out.
