The Ingwavuma River, it flows east into the Ndumu complex via pans and rivulets. Spent many hours here, for a period of about four years, all by myself with only the sound of arguing Heuglins Robins as company.

Ficus Sycomorous - the Sycomore fig commonly seen on the riverbanks of Zululand - and elsewhere. Integral part of some places's diet, especially the Phongolo river floodplain where the delicious fruit are eaten raw and also dried and then ground up with maize meal to make a wholesome meal. The trees ( like the Marula) are not used for firewood as it is too valuable, therefore the lesser known name of "Sizabantu" which means "help of/ for the people" used in some areas. The common name is uMkhiwane. The tree also stabilises and anchor/ supports riverbanks.

The ones in the picture are from an area between Empangeni and Richards Bay.

Brings tears in my eyes. I worked that area in the bush from Empangeni all the way up to Volksrust. Many happy days.

A typical middle of winter, dreary, sea sunrise in Zululand. Richards Bay near the caravan park.

They say a picture says a thousand words. In this one I can actually smell the sea, sand and birth of a new day! You got the mood perfect, beautiful. Looking forward to Zululand after Christmas!
