Default Larger tires for freelander 2

looking for advice on fitting larger tires for a freelander 2.

I was hoping to swop down to 17inch rims, but finding a decent set is just not happening, and the aftermarket options available are seriously ugly, so I will stick to 18s.

Currently running factory size 235/60/18, but I want a bit more sidewall and lift (I will also be fitting a spacer kit in the near future. Just waiting till the front shocks need to be replaced which should be in the next few months.

With the Freelander lacking the low range, I don't want to go too big, I was hoping to find something decent in the 235/65/18 size, but I am battling. I saw a Hilux with 235/65/18 BF A/T on last weekend, but I have not been able to find a tire shop that stocks that size, and Errol's tires don't list them either.

What are you guys running that have bigger tires? I do a lot of gravel travel, and sidewall strength is important to me. I currently have Hankook Dynapro ATMs on, and I know the Freelander guys love them, but I am not impressed. Very noisy for an AT, and the sidewalls are really weak (Granted, these a the P spec, by I had to replace 2 recently, because of sidewall failure, and I could also not source LT or even XL spec in my size)

Looking forward to opinions and advice.

For personal preference reasons, I would prefer to stay 235 but would go to 255/60/18 if there is no other choice.

I did do a search before posting, but all of those threads are a couple of years old now. new tires have come on the market since, etc etc.

My main concern is finding something in the 235/65/18 size, and I am hoping someone can point me in the direction of a supplier of decent AT tires in that size.

Shop around for Ford Mondeo or Focus or even Volvo mags - same PCD.

16 inch alloys fit on the FL2's and even 15 inch steelies....then you can run 31 or 32's or your choice.

if you want A/T 18 inch tyres who are going to have to look at 255/60/18.
From there you have your pic.
I went with General grabbers when I still had the Freelander and can only complment them.

Sorry for the poor quality pics, the first pic is the 17 inch ford kuga rim,the second is the original land rover 17 inch rim,i have both sets.
The nice thing about the kuga rim is,when i fit my bridgestone 265/65/17 tyres, then the gap between the strut and tyre is about 10mm,and with the original land rover rim with the same tyres, the gap is about 5mm.
The original land rover rim feels heavier than the kuga rim.
So i cant make up my mind as to which rim i should keep Click image for larger version.

One needs to keep in mind that the freelander is a heavy car, so I would be worried about the strength of the Ford or volvo rims, which are made for regular sedans.

I really wish I tracked down the owner of that hilux to find out where he got BF A/Ts in 235/65/18s

Volvo XC60 is aslo an SUV that runs 235/65/17's, I guess their weight rating would be ok as it uses the same platform as the FL. Also Ford Territory rims would fit and have suffiecient weight ratings.

I see, you are talking about 15" rims on an FL1, don't think that you could do that on an FL2. FL2 minimum is probably 16", even with the angle grinder :-)

luckily the calipars pushes backwards as the pads wear away, so no need for the grinder

Nope, 15 inch steelies from a Mondeo or Focus will fit.

You can fit 16 inch alloys from Volvo, Mondeo, etc.

    Ok,interesting, thanks.

The rims for one of the XC models would probably be better, ie stronger, you need 1000kg rims. FL2 is not light.

But I once priced new Volvo 17" rims for my FL2, they were seriously expensive. Later found a set of used Landrover FL2 rims.

Indeed, they fit... just don't go offroad and do any form of articulation. Let alone let your insurance find out you put a non-rated wheel on a 4x4. Been through the exercise, not worth it.

Edit: Unless those 'steelies' are rated... this i'm not sure of actually
