It has been mentioned a few times by a few people here, the Lexus develops at least 300nm torque from just above startup to red line. First make sure the engine is running 100% before changing gearing, tires and the like. 4000rpm in a 4l v8 at 120. My little 1300 spins at 3500 with a third of the torque and about half the mass. Even the 3L V6 ford courier ran at 3000rpm at 120 and that thing was a lazy donkey with a torque peak of only +-200nm.

So far all evidence you have posted is pointing to one unhappy V8.
I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.

SO - had the Defender on the dyno yesterday. It was confirmed that it is running very rich at open throttle. The guy here has actually done a few Lexus conversions so I believe he knows a bit about the engines (he has a Lexus in a Range Rover of his). He has a chip system that he will put in so that we can adjust the fuel ratio's.

He did however say that my diff ratio's are way too high geared at the standard 3.54 and I should look at a diff ratio of 4.1 and up for the vehicle.

So that pretty much leaves me back at the original problem of sourcing diff that I have been struggling to do. It looks like my only option at the moment is to import the Ashcroft CW&P from the UK. Not looking forward to those import duties and VAT.

I would rather change the transfer case instead of spending plenty $$$ on 4.1 CW&P's

The transfer case swap only affects high range gearing. The 4.1's might be too low for low range, unless you're running big tires.

From a pricing perspective, the Ashcroft CW&P's are GPB500 shipped (about R9k) and add in some import duty and VAT, you're likely up to about R11.5k.

I have been quoted a second hand transfer case for R7,500 but that means I also have to send them my transfer case from East London which I'm guessing will be about R1,500 to ship (I think its to Cape Town) so about R9,000 in total for a used TC.

I hear your concern though on the low range...

I still dont seen the problem Series 3 diffs (complete) can be picked up for R1, 5k each.
With a grinder and a welding machine, anythings possible. If push comes to shove, cut off the pumpkin mounting plate or make a new one.....playing doesn't cost a cent if you DIY.
Hell, if you can fit Toy diffs under a Defender, anythings possible

has yours Defender got the P38 diff in the back if so Ashcrofts do a stock 3.54 and 4.10 C&P and for the Front it is a rover long nose which they do the following stock 3.54 and HD(heavy duty) 3.5 3.75 4.12 4.37 4.75 so looking at the C&P don't think you can match up unless you use 4.10 and a 4.12 maybe see what KAM do in C&Pyour other option is T-Case with 1.667with my build i am getting rid of the P38 and putting a Long nose in the back so can run HD 3.5 C&P as there P38 selection is very minimal try this link for gear ratio `http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

and all you need from a Series 3 diff is the CW&P

Gary, don't the Series Rover CW&P fit the later Rover carrier?

    That's you told, Gary!

Even if it does fit, you will also need the pinion wheel to match, so that needs to fit, too.

Ja OK so here is Differentials 101

I need the Old Fart to see if the Bevel Ring Gear (also called the crown wheel) fits on the later Differential Cage (also called the center portion). Yes, the Bevel Pinion and Pinion Shaft (commonly just called the pinion) must fit the center portion casing properly, but that SHOULD be fine if the "nose" of the casing is the same. There WERE short nose and long nose casings, hence my question to Old Fart.

Eish, this oldtimers thing is taking its toll.....

Funny thing is that Rob was in last month to rebuild his pumpkin.....

I've never tried mix matching CG and Pinions into the other carriers. I normally just move the whole pumpkin over......

Damn it, ask me Series questions while I can still answer them.......

(Johno you sod, just wait until you want to "borrow" an LT230 TC again......)

Yes the series 3 cw bolts up to the defender carrier but it does not work. Need a spacer ring machined first to space the cw away drop the carrier. About 5mm.

Thanks WildSpike....that should shut the Jello-lush up for a bit

So basically the Series pinion is thinner in diameter and the CG needs to be spaced to compensate.......

AFAIK the Rover pumpkin bolts in, the Sailsbury is mounted in the diff and has a loose cover....thats why I say fit the complete pumpkin.
