Default 4x4Direct's 88" Series II rebuild

I asked about the serial numbers a while ago and it seems like our Series II is about a 1961 Model. It is the 2.25 liter Petrol.

The Langebaan branch of 4x4Direct decided to make it a team building exercise.
The plan is to strip it completely and do a complete rebuild.

The Landy was in good running condition when I bought her. She has been neglected and was standing outside. Have some minor rust to the metal body parts.
She seems to be 100% original except for the pro white rims (painted black) and the plastic grill.

Every Wednesday we come together and work on the Landy.

We started stripping it two weeks ago, mostly body stripping and the past Wednesday we remove the body and started loosening the engine and suspension.

Regarding the serial number and year:
Unfortunately it is registered as a rebuild in 1994.
In another post Jembo commented this about the serial number:
"LR IIA serial numbers starting with "243..." probably means it was made early in 1961. The 243...series were exported "completely knocked down" (CKD) and were RHD 88's.
Yours may have been rebuilt by 1994.
    Hope this helps!"

    Won't be done before Christmas.
Yes will update pics every Thursday

Yes, will definitely change colour. Want to build is as original as possible.

Under the door hinges I found a white colour, seems like it originally was white.
Where fenders fit to frame it was police yellow indication that maybe it some stage it was a police Landy.

Does anybody have original rims laying around?

Great stuff. Although to get it original you will need to change the fenders and grill. Those you have are from a Series 3.

Your engine and dash look identical to my 1961 S2.

Last week 50% of the team had the flu, so we skipped last week's session. This week we managed to remove and split the engine and gearbox. We also loosened most of the blade springs and diffs.
Only need to remove tie rods next week and then we battle to get some of the shackle bolts out as they are so much rusted that you cannot even turn them inside the shackle bushes.
No wonder she was driving like a gokart

Our time is limited from 18h00 to 21h00, so it is slow going. But on the West Coast everything happens on Skilpadtyd.

GaryFrank, thanx for the tip, I will certainly remember that when putting it back or maybe even on a next project.

Are you gonna acid dip the chassis? Sand/bead blasting only cleans the outside...

Derustit....021 552 5023 dips all my chassis before I start repairs.

I would check the provenance on that - plastic grill and headlights on the outside suggest that it is a Series III.

I dunno about that (Series 3)...

hinges, steering wheel, fire wall, clocks all say Series 2.

Methinks some silly bugger popped a plastic grill on to make it look like a later model ( go figure)

Then again....I had a Series 2 that some tard fitted S3 fenders to.....

Could be. What I want to know is why anyone would remove a Series II grill which is a fantastic braai grid, and replace it with a plastic SIII grill which melts on the fire? Silly....

Of course yes , they just never said which Christmas Lekker project & initiative , will be keeping an eye on progress
In my mind a Series II should look like picture attached . I will never forget the day my uncle picked me up from boarding school in Rhodesia in his Landy (I was a little boy in Std 1), just like the picture , I was amazed at all the gear levers . Have loved a SWB Landy all the years

Gary thank you for that one. I was going to have it sand blasted and galvanized, but the inside did worry me.

I think I should take it for sand blasting first so that I can get it back and inspect it to see if there is any nasty surprises like rust on the chassis which needs to be repaired.
Then after that can take it for acid dip.

How do they know they've got all the acid out from the inside, won't it sit in the inner joints of the welds and keep etching at the metal? Not a criticism, just a question.
