Ashley, Pinetown 168 mm and counting, 120 of that was overnight and yesterday. Still raining now.
Pool about to overflow again. Many road closures around here.
Climate change is REAL and it is here now.
We usually have almost no rain in May.

During the past 13 years that I have lived in Ballito I have kept exact records of rainfall. I count my season from the 1st of Sep to the 31st of Aug.
During this time the lowest I recorded was around 750 mm and highest almost 1500 mm.
However, this season is already past 1500 mm and counting. It is going to be extraordinary. New normal perhaps?.
*Edit
1519 mm till this morning.

Looks like quite a bit of damage again in Umhloti, Westbrooke and other areas.
I recorded 106mm this morning. Yesterday morning we had 34mm. This is 60km inland fro Dbn, and we normally get much less rain than Durban.
Here are some reports which came through last night:
M4 between Sibaya and Umdloti northbound completely blocked by mudslide.
M4 Northbound approaching Umdloti Offramp...road washing away...pls warn other road users as well
The Bridge at the bottom of Stockville road is about to collapse. It is extremely dangerous and having just come fom the bridge I would strongly advise to use an alternate route.
Please take note.
Umgeni road flooded.
Higginson highway flooded.
Bayhead and Southcoast road flooded.
Parts of Bluff are flooded.
Parts of Isipingo is flooded.
Pinetown is flooded.
M7 got lot water and mud on roadway.
M13 got lot of water and mud on roadway.
M19 out of Umgeni mud slides and lots of water.

We have cycles in the rainfall. This is very constant and can be seen in SA rainfall figures over the last more than hundred years. 10 years dry, 10 years wet, 10 years very dry, 10 years very wet etc. The 10 years can be more or less. Anything from 8 to 12 or 13.
Interesting is that every wet season starts with big rains and flooding, this is what we are experiencing now.
It is nothing new.

I also have detailed records for many years. The difference is that more frequently now a LOT falls in a short period of time rather than a similar amount spread across the month. The rate of fall, apart from other considerations, is somewhat responsible for the damage.
Yes, the cycles of dry and wet are correct.

Interesting variations, KZN having unusually heavy rains, yet in the Western Cape our rain season is unusually late this year.
32mm in Heuwelsig, Bloem on Friday. The last drought we experienced was the 2015/16 season, since then it's been abnormally wet and as we know with rainfall in SA, what in numbers go up must come down. When the next drought hits, it's gonna hit HARD.

Before these May rains but after the April ones, comment was that the 100 year RP return period theoretical rainfall may need to be upped 20%. I guess shorter return periods will be increased as well.

Western Cape winter rainfall is way behind schedule this year.
But with two back to back low pressure systems fast approaching from the West, it could get very interesting early next week !!
Let's see if they grow in strength or loose potency.

Spot on Peter, the volume/time was the main problem, other factors may have exacerbated the problem but having double the previous rainfall record over 24/48 hrs was never going to end well.
I just hope the coming rain makes it north to where its needed - things are getting critical down there!!![]()
