This is bad, the company ( Land Rover) should have done the recall, I think this is cheating. These cars cars very expensive. In December my wife wanted us to buy a Discovery but we ended up buying a Pajero Shogun after reading all the reviews about the Discovery and we have never owned one. We decided to stay away from any Land Rover cars.

    Issue:
    Crankshaft/crankshaft bearing failure - TDv6 Diesel Engine.
    Cause:
Low incidence of crankshaft failure are being encountered, caused mainly by incorrect location of the main bearing shells during assembly, or through rotation of the shells during normal use. A new procedure has been implemented to ensure:
    - more rapid resolution of customer concerns, and
    - greater visibility of failure modes in order to improve repair process and parts delivery.

    Action:
For any suspected crankshaft/bearing failure, please contact your local Dealer Technical Supportor FRED team for details of the enhanced customer handling procedure.
The list below summarises typical symptoms of crankshaft/bearing failure, but please contact your DTS/FRED team if in any doubt as they will be pleased to offer assistance:
    · Crankshaft is seized, engine cannot be turned either via starter motor or crankshaft pulley bolt.
    · Oil sump or engine cylinder block is holed, with oil leakage and/or metallic debris found on engine under-tray.
    · Engine makes a loud rumbling/knocking sound when running which worsens as the engine is placed under load. The engine oil pressure warning light may flash or be continuously illuminated, especially at low engine speeds.

    Hi Sechaba

that Topix goes back to 2014, when I got it from a contact in UK and posted it on this forum. Since then JLRSA started a goodwill assistance program for engines affected, provided they were within 7 years or 240'000km whichever occurred first.

This however is not good enough in a situation, where so many engines are/were affected. So lets see how Dirk's endeavours will pan out.

This was the very first reported crank failure I saw from a non LR TDV6 (JAG) in Poland.

    Hi all

It's most popular Land Rover owners forum in Russia - http://lr-club.com/
The statistics of the engines failure (sticking main, big end bearings, broken crankshaft), post at the forum:
    2.7L - 86 engines for the last 7 years
    3.0L - 27 engines for the last 5 years
The average mileage of the engine up to failure: D3 - 171000 km., D4 - 88000 km

Most people think that the main reason of engines failure is the low-saps recommended oil and low oil pressure.

It would be really interesting to see the comparative sales figures for the models above over the same years.

    From Disco3.co.uk

I have a 2012 Feb built Discovery 4 SDV6 that ran beautifully for the past 4 years until it suddenly lost power while cruising uphill on a 60mph motorway, needless to say I was really lucky that I made immediate decision to pull the vehicle over to the side as soon as I felt the loss in power, as by the time I got there the car shut down completely and cannot be restarted again.

The dealer disassembled the engine and determined the crankshaft sleeve had failed and caused the engine to seize up, a complete new engine is needed as they do not repair engine in Taiwan. A quick check on the internet revealed that there are a few cases like mine all had failed sleeve or around that area of some sort due to factory part defect or assembly error.

Dealer has asked me to foot the bill of the new engine but I am not going down without a fight, it is unacceptable to me for a diesel engine to fail just after 4 years 120,000km or around 75,000mi, as I have had 10 cars in the past 20 years and none of them had an engine failure, let alone luxury vehicle like this. They have completely ignored my request to share any cost of the repair, I plan to take this to court with them but need some help with concrete evidence that this is happening around the world and being acknowledged by creditable media sources.

Funny result: engine failures is about 1% of sales (that posted at the forum)
The problem does not exist in reality?

Crankshafts fail between cylinders 2/3, is there any preventative measures that can be taken ?

    And another one... http://www.disco4.com/forum/topic154098.html

Hello, my first post so be gentle. My 2011 D4 as suffered crank failure with a humongous repair bill. Anyone in the same boat or have some experience is getting this resolved, thanks

The "low-saps" comment is interesting. From what I can find out, any oil with a "C" in the rating (i.e. C3 as opposed to A3/B4, or A5), or an "E", is low saps. I haven't found any other links referring to that.

and another D3, no details yet: http://www.disco4.com/forum/post1752391.html

    Hi All,

My D3 has suffered crankshaft failure. I have been offered a Jaguar engine and understand it will fit the D3 using the LR sump and fuel rail, but I would like to double check if the bell housing bolt pattern is identical. If anyone has fitted the Jaguar version I would appreciate any advice.

The list is growing by the day, and still JLR seem to stick to their ostrich strategy.

There was another (German) luxury car manufacturer who suffered a similar failure rate, only that on that specific model engine failures were in excess of 20% compared to the TDV6 issue, which also seems to get close to the 20% mark in the South African scenario (Thermostat housing, spun bearings, snapped cranks).

The main difference with the German manufacturer is, that they immediately nipped it in the bud and replaced ALL the affected engines, with the result that the reputation of the manufacturer didn't suffer.

History will decide how this issue will pan out in the long run.......................................

You know very well how it will turn out for JLR and JLRSA Mr. Bosch...

    Hi 2befree

yes and one of the results will be a low resale value even for the new D5 when it will be launched. Because never forget that what we discuss here on the forum amongst a relatively small number of the total of all D3/D4 owners is COMMON KNOWLEDGE in the trade and has been so since at least 2010.

So yes JLR and JLRSA will be affected by the way they handled this. Having been involved in the wholesale side of the motor trade I have 1st hand experience of this and especially of what it takes to turn a negative customer and trade perception around.

As I said history will show us the way - with hindsight, but at a price.

many guys in the UK are resorting to buying & fitting 2nd hand engines from EuroJag when they have this failure.
