    Hi all

It's most popular Land Rover owners forum in Russia - http://lr-club.com/
The statistics of the engines failure (sticking main, big end bearings, broken crankshaft), post at the forum:
    2.7L - 86 engines for the last 7 years
    3.0L - 27 engines for the last 5 years
The average mileage of the engine up to failure: D3 - 171000 km., D4 - 88000 km

Most people think that the main reason of engines failure is the low-saps recommended oil and low oil pressure.

It would be really interesting to see the comparative sales figures for the models above over the same years.

    From Disco3.co.uk

I have a 2012 Feb built Discovery 4 SDV6 that ran beautifully for the past 4 years until it suddenly lost power while cruising uphill on a 60mph motorway, needless to say I was really lucky that I made immediate decision to pull the vehicle over to the side as soon as I felt the loss in power, as by the time I got there the car shut down completely and cannot be restarted again.

The dealer disassembled the engine and determined the crankshaft sleeve had failed and caused the engine to seize up, a complete new engine is needed as they do not repair engine in Taiwan. A quick check on the internet revealed that there are a few cases like mine all had failed sleeve or around that area of some sort due to factory part defect or assembly error.

Dealer has asked me to foot the bill of the new engine but I am not going down without a fight, it is unacceptable to me for a diesel engine to fail just after 4 years 120,000km or around 75,000mi, as I have had 10 cars in the past 20 years and none of them had an engine failure, let alone luxury vehicle like this. They have completely ignored my request to share any cost of the repair, I plan to take this to court with them but need some help with concrete evidence that this is happening around the world and being acknowledged by creditable media sources.

Funny result: engine failures is about 1% of sales (that posted at the forum)
The problem does not exist in reality?

Hello, my first post so be gentle. My 2011 D4 as suffered crank failure with a humongous repair bill. Anyone in the same boat or have some experience is getting this resolved, thanks

The "low-saps" comment is interesting. From what I can find out, any oil with a "C" in the rating (i.e. C3 as opposed to A3/B4, or A5), or an "E", is low saps. I haven't found any other links referring to that.

and another D3, no details yet: http://www.disco4.com/forum/post1752391.html

    Hi All,

My D3 has suffered crankshaft failure. I have been offered a Jaguar engine and understand it will fit the D3 using the LR sump and fuel rail, but I would like to double check if the bell housing bolt pattern is identical. If anyone has fitted the Jaguar version I would appreciate any advice.

The list is growing by the day, and still JLR seem to stick to their ostrich strategy.

There was another (German) luxury car manufacturer who suffered a similar failure rate, only that on that specific model engine failures were in excess of 20% compared to the TDV6 issue, which also seems to get close to the 20% mark in the South African scenario (Thermostat housing, spun bearings, snapped cranks).

The main difference with the German manufacturer is, that they immediately nipped it in the bud and replaced ALL the affected engines, with the result that the reputation of the manufacturer didn't suffer.

History will decide how this issue will pan out in the long run.......................................

    Another to add...
    My 2011 D4 SDV6 failed last week. 170 000km.
Waiting to get vehicle to Land Rover this week but indy has found oil coming out crank seal and engine cannot be turned.

Dirk I'll be interested to keep up with this as I won't take this lying down. Will wait to see what LRSA say.

I Became aware of a broken crank this week. Someone posted on a facebook group.
I called the owner and chatted for a while to get as much info as possible.
I based my feedback here on our conversations and as we all know I could have gotten a lot more info, but my report is based on the facts that I could gather from the owner.

    Crank Failure on 252,000km

Current owner bought the 2007 Discovery3 TDV6 2 years ago on 200,000km on the clock from previous first owner.
Previous owner had vehicle serviced by a LR dealership from new with service history up to 200,000 ( 24,000kmk service intervals)
Current owner opted for 10-15,000 km services.
These services were done by a normal workshop just a "guy that knows and services Land Rovers, but also other cars", so services not done by Dealer or known Indie.
Oil pump NOT replaced with belts at 164,000km
Regular maintenance done by the "guy" like injectors etc, but car kept going back to have problems resolved constantly.
Owner has no clue what parts or OIL was used. Mechanic never specified anything, invoices simply said oil change.

I also asked the owner about their driving style...Heavy foot or slow coach ?
    No towing
    Day to Day car
I was told they did not drive fast as the vehicle would cut out when flooring the accelerator, so they normally took of slow and then simply drove around slowly never high revving.
    ----------------------------------------------------------

That's all info I have to share

I would love to see more reports like this on High mileage TDV6 vehicles...maybe there is a pattern regarding preventative maintenance or the lack thereof ?
Dirk for one may disagree as I'm sure his vehicle was well maintained, yest still turned bearings, however this is a debatable topic not for this specific thread.

You decide for yourself if this vehicle was "well Looked after" and if the crank issues may have been avoided in this specific case.

Please no mindless comments from the Trolls...we have heard them all before :-)

According to this thread (http://www.disco4.com/forum/topic160...728c335efba56b), it appears as if LR has finally added tabs to the bearing shells.

I think we really need to separate the 2 failures

    1 - Turned bearings
2 - Snapped crank - bearings still as they should be.

For those who understand cranks and steel manufacture, I add a question.
I have read a lot about better manufactured cranks - billet, heat treatment, special CNC, etc - I understand none of this though. Is the problem in the design or manufacture of the cranks?

    Hi Disco Deon

it is most probably a combination of both. The reason why I am saying this is:

    1. Broken cranks as a result of seized bearings (normally in decently designed engines, either a conrod snaps or even makes a gaping hole in the engine block)

    2. Broken crank with bearings intact - There is a certain percentage out there doing that, but only from 7A onwards. The main reason for that is a metallurgical weakness, either from a bad casting or incorrect heat treatment.

But affecting both points 1 and 2 there is an inherent weak spot in those cranks, namely between #2 main and #2 big end journals as most cranks snap exactly there.

    Just my 2c worth

If you want to swing past my place I have one of those snapped cranks at my place.

^Ouch, that's got to burn, even if you have to much money to know what to do with.
