    Default Braai Snacks

    Hi everyone

So I thought this could be a useful thread to share some ideas.

Got two braai's on this weekend at friends houses. People say " please bring some snacks/light starters"

Now we not talking crisps, peanuts i.e stuff in the packets

What do you put together for some starters/things to break the hunger while you have the first few cold one?!

I normally do chicken wings on a sosatie stick marinaded the night before, and also dates wrapped in bacon.

    Buffalo wings...

joint the wings and toss the tips.

    salt 'em and braai 'em.

Toss them in some Striacha sauce mixed with melted butter, serve with a blue cheese and cream cheese dressing and celery sticks...

Mielies - I usually cut them into 4, wrap in foil and butter, let them steam until cooked, then serve with rock salt to dip them in.

    White ones are best!

Wieletjies - A roll of that "phyllo" pastry, roll open flat, spread thin layer of marmite over entire surface, follow with layer of grated cheese and half a pack of bacon pieces. Roll it all up like a swiss roll, slice into wheels about thumb thickness (i guess about 2cm wide each). Place slices flat in a lightly greased/ buttered baking pan. Bake at 180 in oven for about 20 min or so. Adjust recipe to taste etc....enjoy!

Some really great ideas here! However, I believe SWAMBO makes the BEST pre-braai snacks! She's Indian, so it's puri patha, fresh samoosas and chili bites! Puri is disks of fried flat bread, patha is madumbi leaves rolled in a spicy gram flour paste. Slice the patha roll into pinky-thin disks and fry on either side until slightly crisp. Sandwich between two disks of freshly-fried puri and enjoy. You won't believe the flavour!

actually you've stumbled onto my secret - i don't 'braai' any more.

    I do on-going snacks.

the ideas of large chunks of meat etc etc piled on a plate is so last century.

a good supply of snack things and just continually braai them hand them around.
oh - i do a steak , big steak, then it gets sliced and diced and handed around with a little rock salt for dipping
