Hi 4x4 community,
looking at at doing a trail today?
has anybody done the bass lake trail?
Any reviews/opinions would be appreciated!

Bass Lake, when it is dry, is really a pleasure to do, nothing difficult about it. But when that red turf gets wet, wow, then the fun starts!

It's my favourite trail, partly because it is close to me, but also because it has a lot of obstacles.
It has quite a large variety of obstacles, from normal ground to rocky bits and a few water obstacles. If you have a large (wide) 4x4, the last part at the water section might be problematic as it will scratch your car badly. It is not a difficult or challenging section so I avoid it. Have done it at my first outing though.
The trail will take you about 3 hours. As said before, when dry it is easy, a 3 grade at most. When whet though, it is very different. Put it this way, I can do the whole trail in the dry without rear diff lock, but when wet, have to use it at least 6 times.
There are nice braai facilities as well.
I did it for the second time about 2 weeks ago with the Jeep club, still a really nice trail and not too difficult but not too easy either.
The water sections as stated above could give you a few scratches but they not difficult at the moment as the water level is very low so there's not much chance of you getting stuck, there's also the mud pit, very small but still fun.

We went through last month. Awesome fun trail.
The reeds section is a tight fit, so the bigs cars will get scratched. But everything else is fun and entertaining.
Will be going back the moment the rains start...

Thanks everybody for your feedback.
we just got back from completing the trail, definitely not too difficult. Couple of big ascents and descents. Rooks us about 2.5 hours.
without any training and only being our 2nd trail, we managed to complete all obstacles.
we did the reed section and managed to collect some nice scratches all over the jeep. Just finished polishing the car, and 98% of the scratches have lifted already.
I can imagine after rain or when muddy, could be pretty tricky.
For anybody considering the trail, it's definitely worth a go.
Still one of my favorites and nice braai area for afterwards. Hope it will still be there for many years.

I couldnt find a more recent thread, so will update here.
A bunch of us did bass lake 4x4 course after the rain on Saturday. Was very muddy.
A fun track. I held up the group as the one section I just couldnt avoid drifting into a deep rut and they all helped pack and dig.
Another group had one of their members turn around as they couldnt make the one climb. The numbers are still confusing and they didn't have maps available. Some of the sections were just not doable due to being washed away and no traction. Would be fun in the dry but expect a challenge in the wet.
I saw a Pajero Sport offroad for the first time. Very impressed and even had HT tyres on.
