Default KTP trip report - August 2016

This is a brief report on a trip that my wife, Meyrene, and I, did to Kgalagadi in August.

18 & 19 Aug, we spoilt ourselves with 2 nights at Bushmans Kloof in the Cederberg, a really tough way to start a camping trip. This was most enjoyable but it is a difficult to justify the cost.

20th Aug, spent the night at Kalahari Monate after doing some shopping in Upington. The owners have lost their lease on the game reserve across the road but are now building a house on the same property as the chalets and camping site so I am sure it will continue to be a good stopover point.

21 – 23 Aug, we now met up with SamM, from the Forum, his wife, Marijke, and another couple for the Kgalagadi part and these days were spent at Rooiputs 3. That evening while we were braaing, a strong, forecast, SW wind, heralding a cold front, came up and made things very unpleasant. The morning temperature was -5deg, so not nice at all. The next night was also cold but after that night time temperatures were reasonable, +10deg, and although there was a strong northerly wind during the day, it dropped off in the evenings. Game viewing was not as plentiful as it had been 10 days before our arrival, we also did not see the Cheetah with her cubs, who are in the area. A rather irritating aspect of our stay at Rooiputs was the number of cars that drove through the camp, just to have a look, and some of them were not shy about driving right through our campsite.

24 – 28 Aug, time to go and punish ourselves at Polentswa 1. We had a very interesting sighting of a leopard on the top of a tree, probably a Camel-thorn Acacia, just north of Gunong. We think it was eating a Tawny eagle chick as there were two Tawnys in a tree close by and their breeding time would fit in with this. At Rooikop waterhole we also saw a Booted Eagle, otherwise it was mainly Tawnys and Bateleurs. One morning we also had a very good sighting of a leopard with her cub, for about 45 mins, without any other vehicles, 7km north of Polentswa. Last year, Polentswa waterhole was very “quiet”but this year things seemed to have returned to “normal”.

During our time at Polentswa we had an unpleasant experience with the section ranger from Nossob, Mr. Aubrey Murphy. He claimed one of our vehicles had arrived back late in camp one evening but we did not agree with him. He was doing his “policing” from the lodge at Polentswa and was not at the campsite itself. He said, “I am sick and tired of South Africans ignoring the curfew times on the Botswana side of the Park” (As of submitting an e-mailed complaint, about this incident, (6 Sept) I have not had a response from any of the 3 SANParks addressees)

29 – 31 Aug, back to Rooiputs 3. On our way south bound at Kwang waterhole we saw 5, very full, spotted hyenas. One of them was still wandering around with a wildebeest head but there was no other sign of their feast. One morning, 2kms north Leeudril waterhole, we watched a caracal for about 25mins, it made a few half-hearted pounces but was not successful in catching anything.

1st Sept, up early and off on a long drive to De Lande Guesthouse in Nieuwoudtville. We had hoped to stay longer but when I did the booking, only one night was available so we decided to take a chance and decide whether to then return home via Tankwa or not. Weather was cold and overcast when we woke up so decided to head for home after an enjoyable stay at De Lande.

    Total distance covered 3100km.

Thanks Malcolm, that leopard on top of the tree is fascinating.

Edit - there is an ongoing leopard project in the KTP, I'm sure they'd love to get your pics and the stories behind them.

Great report and sightings Malcolm. I can imagine that you must have a few more shots of the leopard in the tree and the one pulling the kill across the road. What lens did you use for the leopard in the tree? Again well done- never been there man I must get off my butt.

You were very lucky with the cat sightings, did you encounter some cheetah?
During April we mainly spotted lion & cheetah and only once leopard briefly.
Nice memories, I must get to that Polentswa 4x4 trail again sometime!

Thanks for all the positive comments.

RobH, the photos were passed on to the Kgalagadi leopard project and they are in fact the first photos of Safran's cub.

Tron, it is a Sony bridge camera, PowerShot SX50HS, so no fancy lens.

Jors55, no we did not see any cheetah this time.
