    Default 2.2 Auto

Drove the 2.2 Auto yesterday, did not realise that the new box is a double clutch unit, it was very impressive.

    As in DSG type?

    You sure of that?

    Wow, that is strange.

I would have thought Ford would have used an adapted version of the auto box in the 3.2.

Strange that VW has not gone the DSG route, as they reckon an auto is better for off road use, but Ford chose to.

Would be interested to hear from Ford why they ditched the auto box in favour of the dual clutch setup.

As far as I have it it is the same box as the 3.2, but a different torque converter?

How do you rate the 2.2 and auto box combination?

I was very impressed. It has normal mode, sport mode and the ability to manually select gears tiptronic style.

That doesn't mean it's double clutch. Can do it in the current 3.2 auto as well

I did not say that. I have driven the 3.2 Auto and the 2.2 is different, anyway time will tell

Ford's dual-clutch system is called Powershift (like in my 2.0tdci Kuga )
If it doesn say so, it is probably standard automatic - with a torque converter. But don't look at it in a negative way; it remains a good system.

Maybe our Fury Ford dude can help us out. I have driven all the automatic double cabs on the market, with the Amarok one being the absolute best until I drove the 2.2. It does not drive like a normal torque converter type box and yes, the sales oke said double clutch and it does drive like the dsg in the several Gti's I have driven.

My concern is he shouldn't be calling it a double-clutch, it is a dual-clutch system from the German name: A#direct-shift gearbox#(German: Direkt-Schalt-Getriebe), commonly abbreviated to#DSG, is an electronically controlled dual-clutch multiple-shaft manual gearbox, in a transaxle design without a conventional clutch pedal, and with full automatic, or semi-manual control". If he insists on double-clutch he is 15 years behind. All up to date technical experts will call it a dual-clutch system. Having said that, I am dead keen to try one out!

Is DSG not just the VW term for it? Ford have Powershift. ..I suppose all the manufacturers will have a name for the same thing?

I HIGHLY doubt that the gearbox is a dual-clutch setup. I think that the salesman is a bit confused.

I have attached the spec form the 2.2 Ranger in Europe, which shows the 6R80 box same as the 3.2.

Double clutch cannot take stress , same reason the Amarok does not have DSG double clutch.

He He... That's why the 500kW Audi R10 has one... So that it can break..
Or even the 1000Nm Audi LeMans racer has one...

Or the Porsche 911 Turbo.. 750Nm

But... I doubt a normal 2.2TDCi "Bakkie" will have one..

VW's new V6 TDTi will apparently get one. (+600Nm)
