Default 4x4 Megaworld shared some interesting info Re bumpers

    Hi guys,

So my Ranger is at 4x4MW in Edenvale today for its suspensions and the dealer manager phoned me regarding the Rhino bumper i want to put on (had to specify so the put the correct stiffens springs in) and he said that they are busy with the insurers around claims that if the bumper is not SRS approved by the manufacturer that they will not pay out? This could have some heavy implications for people who already have bumpers fitted and also the local manufacturers of bumpers...

    Anybody hear something similar?

    Cheers

Out of curiosity. When they refer to SRS aproved, do they refer to an approval body, or "Secondary Restraint System" as it is abbreviated to on the dashboard?

    If memory serves me right...

We had a listen, at an organised event, where 4x4MW explained the whole replacement bumper conundrum. Apparently the replacement bumpers change the crash forces and the function of the airbag mechanism is influenced, deploying too early or too late, can't remember. Apparently....4x4MW obtained approval from Ford after submitting some test results of their replacement bumper (OME I think). Same goes for the suspension etc. At that stage there was only one bumper approved en hy is %&^%$ duur!!!!

Funny that Ford offer to fit you a R6000,00 nudge-bar. Wonder if that was tested

I have not heard anything about insurers not paying out. That sounds ridiculous. If it's a specified accessory on the insured policy, that should be it. I notice 4x4MW spend a lot of time knocking competitor products rather than highlighting the positives of their own. It's not a very appealing sales strategy in my opinion.
Out of interest, the Rhino 4x4 bumper is airbag tested and approved.

Never heard that, what a crock of poo.

of course, megaword sells ARB bumpers which have a sticker stating they are airbag friendly or whatever - but thats also meaningless, because it's not manufacturer approved or whatever, so if the insurers were going to be sticky, they'll be sticky about any bumper.

I suspect a large dose of BS is added there.

AFAIK to get full SRS or airbag compliance you would need to crash test 10 vehicles
So 10 Disco 3s, 10 Disco 4s, 10 Rangers, 10 Pajeros, 10 Tunas and so on and so on.

Can anyone tell me if this has been done

If the bumper is so heavy that the suspension springs needs to be modified, then there's no chance that a manufacturer (not a dealer) will agree.

Ask him what SRS approved means. The answers are always interesting.

    That's highly unlikely.

    This is proper testing.

Just running the bumper into a wall is pointless imo, you need to test the bumper attached to the vehicle. BUT that's just me

I don't think its me being stupid. Here is your original point:

I don't see any vehicles or airbags in the video you posted. So how exactly do you propose they tested it exactly.

But more importantly, what are the test parameters & approved by who exactly?

I already know the answers 8).

In the meantime, here is ARBs very very very long winded response where they confirm that they don't actually crash test vehicles.

I would like to ask a serious question:

So the manufacturer designs a a bumber with a lot of specifics in mind lets say one is accident related for when two cars collide
now if you hit someone with the normal stock standard bumber it is designed to absorb some impact and and lesseon the impact force or to distribute it in a certain way.
now if you have a heavy duty after market bumber fitted it will not react in the same way.
so heavan forbid you hit another vehicle and there is a fatality would the other person not have recourse to sue because the accesory you had fitted was not crash tested or approved by the manufacturer for use on there vehicle.
