Default Zimbabwe August 2016 trip report

    Hi

Here is SWAMBO's first attempt at a trip report of our recent Zimbabwe trip. The route was Jhb-Kwanokeng–Elephant Sands-Hwange-Binga-Tashinga-Houseboat-Makuti-Mana Pools-Gweru-Jhb

Great to see all the recent trip reports about Zim as when we started this there where very few recent ones. Hope this is useful to someone.

    Cheers
    Karl

Great report, please thank your wife Karl. I particularly liked the bit about the jerry can being returned - nice touch, it's this sort of thing that makes Zim extra special for me.

    Great report.........makes me homesick.
Reading about your disappointment at Binga, Chilila, I would recommend future travelers to Binga to stay at Masumu River Lodge which is just close to Chilila. They have chalets, a restaurant, and camping facilities with the best ablutions I've encountered. Price very good too.

Other stop overs along the way to Binga via the back roads is Msuna and Mlibizi.

Particularly enjoyed your report as we've also just got back from a very similar trip to Zim travelling almost the same route. We entered at Pandamatenga . You are very fortunate to have seen so much game in Mana- we weren't so lucky. I see you had the same campsite as us.Mana pools is is stunning though. My trip report is also under the Zim section. Thanks again.

Thank you for this delightful report. As you write , Zimbabwe is not a cheap country to travel through, some places are run down and roadblocks can be a pain... However, there are so many wonderful experiences you are writing about which makes reading this report a very enjoyable activity. Thank you.

Masuma is still up and running and the fishing season has started to kick in.
I have just spoken to the manager there and all is well.

As far as Spar is concerned...I haven't heard anything about it closing down.

    Thanks for clarification, MariusvdM!

Hi frans. 5 days in mana would be fine as long as that doesn't include traveling as it's 2 long days each way to get there from jhb. Not sure where you coming from?

Thank you for a wonderful report. The Tashinga road is certainly a challenge. We also tackled it with a trailer. Not for the faint hearted. I loved the idea of catching a ride on a house boat from Tashinga. We have friends in Kariba with one. I will have to do a little negotiating. The road back to Kariba is a difficult one but you seemed to have made the right decision going to Karoi, although Gacha Gacha is a great stop over specially if you want to provision the next morning at Kariba. Mana always is great but this is the first report I have read about monkeys and baboons doing their thing above you. We experienced that at 3rd Bridge in Moremi. When returning via Plumtree I usually stop over at Selibe Pikwe and go through Zambesi BP.

Thanks again for a well written report and By the way on our last trip we were also fined for not having 2 reverse lights.

    Regards

Super trip report bringing back great memories of our similar trip a few years ago. We stayed at Antelope Park and found it to be fantastic. It's a pity you chose that particular day to spend there. From your report it seems that road - blocks are something new as we had very few stops on our trip. Mana pools will definitely see us again and next time we will do the game walk that you describe. I rate Mana up with South Luanga as the finest game park I have visited, both better than Serengeti.
