The 4.4 in D3 is a Jag motor same as the 5Lt but if memory serves me correct the 2003 Range Rover had a BMW 4.4 motor.

My Disco's worst tank was 18.6l/100, best tank 10.1l/100km and running average is 14.3l/100km, this over 42 014Km costing R79 268.

So, is the consumption really that much worse, especially considering my mechanical repairs have exceeded R150K over that period.
Given the difference in consumption between my V8 and your diesel, your 42 000km would have consumed 731 liters more have you done it in a V8. That equates to R8772, or R3000 per year more given that you drove the 42 000 km in 3 years.

    That is an ABSOLUTE Bargain!
Turbo costs more than that - R23K
Not to mention injectors - R78K
Or sub-assembly - R82K - and it would seem mine was CHEAP!!!

What is the real time difference in the average service costs after motorplan, between the two?

My Disco3 was pretty flat and consumption only 5.5km/l after I repaired 2 wires from the temperature sender unit which a rat had chewed. Consumption before this was 7km/l on my short trips and 8 on longer trips.

I eventually took it to my Indy today. Diagnostics found fault with the knock sensors. Tracing the cable, showed that the connection block from the sensors was unplugged - they looked connected, but not completely pushed together. I must have unplugged that when I repaired the other wires next to it....

It goes like a bomb again, and consumption is much better again, when looking at the onboard computer consumption.

Chatted to the Indy about ownership costs of V8 and Diesel, and he said that the extra bits which need replacing on the Diesel add up quite a bit, and that at the end of the day total ownership costs will probably be the same, if there are no Diesel engine problems. Same as was echoed by DiscoDeon. Personally, I'll stick with the V8, and have peace of mind.

Paying R300k for the D4 V8 is a great deal!

i was told when doing research between the two , a petrol service cost will be x , a diesel will also be x but there will always be something else involved over and above the normal service. so in the long run the v8 works out cheaper.

If you haven't done the deal yet, the V8 is cheaper to run parts wise and a bit more in fuel.
Or got get a Range Rover with v8 diesel , either the sport L320 or the L322, which is the full fat and has a very nice big body.

In the event of a catastrophic failure, does anyone know what the replacement/rebuild cost would be of the V8 engine? Would be interesting to compare to diesel, though I'm sure it will also be expensive.

I heard that the 5.0l like to eat timing chains and superchargers, if the mods haven't been done.
Pretty catastrophic when the engine goes.
