Default Defender 17/18 inch rims and tires

    Hi guys,

what at complexities are there if any going to a 17 or 18 inch rim on a 110 Defender (2007 model). The vehicle has a 50mm lift and 30mm wheel spacers/adapters.

im currently on 16 inch rims and accidentally ordered a VERY expensive set of 17/18 inch, 6-pot brakes for the front from the UK. Unfortunately, I thought I was running 17's and ordered the brakes while my LR was at my mechanic having a Lexus V8 put in...

i would obviously try sell my 16's with tires then to recover some costs on new rims/tires.

It depends, what size tyres are you looking at putting on those rims? Since you've got a lift and spacers already, why not put on some 285/70R17's? You will still have enough profile to air down quite a bit when off-roading, and the Defender will look nice with the larger than standard tyres.

That's about the size I'd be looking at, struggling to find many 17 inch rim options though.

Have you considered steel rims? Or are you specifically wanting alloys?

No, I think alloy is a must for me.

Old Disco (D1) and Range Rover (Classic) rims will fit but aren't available bigger than 16"
The modern stuff has different PCD

Only alloy solution is to get a new set of adapters made with a new PCD and centre bore. I would suggest going for the BMW 5/120 pattern which will allow most big LR wheels to fit. Alternatively you could fit D2 axles (not a straight bolt in though) which are apparently a bit tougher as well.
I would avoid using car mags unless it will never go offroad as they are not designed to handle the impacts of offroading.
D2 18" rims are pretty easy to find and not too expensive. I think D3 is 5/120 as well.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I wasn't aware I could get an adapter that could modify the pcd, I'll look into that.

Adapters not cheap, that's for sure as I can't find any in SA. Cheapest I have seen is around 300GBP before shipping and customs duty charges...

You don't import an adapter made by an overpaid British workman in between his hourly tea breaks

You get them made locally. Lump of alloy and a bit of lathe and milling time.
They're not cheap but not GBP300 either.

Do you have somebody you could recommend to make some up, I'm in East London and workmanship, not to mention service standards, are not quite up to scratch here...
