    Default Disco 3 vs Touareg

I am currently looking at either the LR Discovery 3 SE 2007, either Diesel (preferable) or V8, or a Touareg V8 2005 that I could get my hands on.
Anyone got any advise for me on which to go for, pros and cons. The VW would be 10% cheaper probably.

The VW would be 10% cheaper probably. noted but also note the LR is 2007 and the VW2005. I will go for the LR but i am a LR fan. But regarding maintenance plans etc. the LP wins and you will only pay for fuel and tires.

Also depending on the VW you are looking at. Being a LR nut if i can get my hands on a V10tdi it is a no brainer.

What are you intending to do with the car?

Thanks. I have an option on a V8 petrol Touareg (with 19 inch wheels - possible a concern) through work with all the extras but have always thought the Discovery was a better off-road vehicle (in that you may actually take it off road).
Will give it some more thought, but on what to use it for - I need to drive it daily to work but would liek the option of doing some off road driving.

    Hullo?

    Study and learn here.
Volkswagen Group has been developing four-wheel drive (4WD) systems almost since its inception during the Second World War. The Volkswagen Kübelwagen, Volkswagen Schwimmwagen and Volkswagen Kommandeurwagen were all military vehicles which required all four road wheels to be "driven", the latter being a 4WD Volkswagen Beetle. Their military, and four wheel drive experiences later aided them in designing the Volkswagen Iltis for the German military (Bundeswehr) in the 1970s. The Iltis utilized an early form of 4WD, which would later become synonymous with "quattro".[2]

I own a 2006 D3 and am very pleased with it. I have seen the V10 Touareg in action off-road and was mightily impressed. To try and compare the 2 is difficult because I am, after all, SLIGHTLY biased. But, what I have seen of the Touareg, I ca make the following observations:
    1) Very capable offroad, despite its mall-crawler looks & styling.
    2) Very stiff body design
    3) Can be used at higher on-road speeds than the Disco
    4) Interior usable space much smaller than the D3 and less practical
    5) Driving / sighting position much lower & through smaller windows than Disco.
    6) The body design makes it more difficult to judge exactly where your wheels/corners are - this can be a problem off-road.
    7) WebLife got his Touareg V10 drowned in Botswana a few weeks ago ( http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showthread.php?t=24957&highlight=touareg ) because the air intake is apparently quite low - something to keep in mind.

    D3 because:

    1. In my opinion it is class leading.
    2. It is newer.
    3. Maintenance Plan will still be in place, other than fuel and tyres, cost free motoring for the duration of the plan, it can be extended at too.

Dont know if it has changed yet, but you might also struggle finding offroad accessories for the VW. Dont think you can buy a bullbar etc
Both are very capable. Those VW's that travelled the world over proved that, and the Disco speaks for itself.
Nice choice to have to make

Raymond from Tuffstuff (who advertise here) has a very nicely kitted out Touareg. See if it's on their website somewhere. It looks very impressive and by all accounts performs well too.
