Default Which currencies is acceptable in Zambia

Hi Ladies and Gents, please assist. It seems that none of the South African banks sells Zambian Kwachas. What other currencies can I use to buy diesel, especially in the Southern parts of Zambia - (Siavonga / Choma). Will they accept usd?

    Hi Nicels

Yes they do accept Usd or you can go the Local banks in Zambia and exchange your Rands to Kwachas there.

Mostly you need Kwacha for fuel, change Rand/N$/US$ at the border. Take the latest exchange rate downloaded on your phone before you leave for reference. I got a much better rate from the touts than from the bank, just count carefully.

ZMW only for fuel and any small stores, saying that mt meru fuel stations advertise on their website that they take CC; I haven't tried it yet and would always go with cash back up incase their system is offline.
Some tourist places ( accom/ activities) will accept credit card and USD and maybe even ZAR
ATM's are becoming more common but over busy periods can run out of cash.
Your best bet is to carry a combination of each.
Just a word of warning that the ex rate is very volitile at the moment one week you'll get 10.40 zmw to 1 USD the next only 9.20

If you are crossing at Kazangula there is an ATM at the border where you can draw Kwacha. All major towns have ATMs and you can draw using a VISA card. Mastercard not acceptable.

There is also an atm at Seheke border post that accepts Visa cards. Apart from the road tax that is payable in USD or Kwacha, they accept Rand for the other border payments.

Yes, I think USD will be accepted. Better to change your Rands or USD in Zambian Kwacha at the border or nearest town. With VISA card you can also get Kwachas from the ATM's. Zanaco bank branches can be found in Chirundu, Choma and Siavonga and they all have an ATM.

Option: Change USD to Kwachas at the border. Mostly there are many money changers. Advice: 1. Stay in your car, close doors and open only your window. 2. Show them USD's and put them away again. 3. Ask for exchange rate (use middle rate from XE.com, at least ZMW 10 per USdollar) 4. Let them count down the kwachas. 5. Check amount in your car again. 6. If Ok, take USD's and hand them over.

Option 2: In some fuel stations you can pay with your VISA card. First ask before you refuel.

Good luck and enjoy your holiday!

Are US$ accepted for fuel (and groceries)? Or is it still just Kwatcha?

Mainly Kwacha. Some service stations accept credit cards but very few. Groceries can be bought with credit card at larger supermarkets.

Kwatcha only for fuel (except in exceptional circumstances) and for most groceries. You can draw ZK at ATMs, but a Visa card is essential outside of the main centres. Only Standard Chartered ATMs accept non-Visa cards.

Many of the Zambian camps and lodges for years exchanged hard foreign currency($, Euro, Pound, even Rand when not too volatile) for their customers. When travelling in Zim, Zam, Moz, and East Africa, I often went to Indian traders to get superior exchange rates. Especially when exchanging large amounts.
