Default Pitching of a TTT - gas strut supports?

Being short, I always find it a challenge to open the TTT taking care not to bend the aluminium frame in the process. I have subsequently made myself a support by using a telescopic aluminium pole, as used for swimming pool brushes, attaching a piece af alu angle at the front. This is then positioned in the middle of the tent roof, with one of the horizontal alu poles inside the alu angle, and the tent is then pushed open.

However I recently saw an advert on Gumtree where it appears that the guy has fitted a gas strut on either side from the tent base to the middle aluminium upright pole of the frame. From the picture it was clear that this was to push the tent open, and I suppose when closing, one would need some tie down to hold it closed. I added a photo now, the frame of this tent looks identical to the Tentco TTT except that the Tentco frame is on the outside, which should make it better fitting a gas strut.

Did anyone try this and can confirm that it is actually working? Don't want to go through the trouble in fitting them and they do not help at all.

Comes standard in Echo tents. Position is a bit different though. Don't think I will be able to lift it without them

    Thanks for the response.

Yes, the Tentco frame is a bit different than the Echo, the bottom room of the Tentco does not have a frame attached to the main tent frame.

Think I might just give it a try seeing those gas struts are not that expensive and can be re-used if not working. Will try to practice a type of clamp that goes around the aluminium pole and then attach the strut to that, thereby not weakening the pole by drilling a hole through it.

Give it a try, can only help. Just take it slow when testing. Long time ago one of the struts twisted and unhooks, almost tearing the tent. they can be quite tough to push in

It also bent the frame a bit, but was fixable

Tks for the advice. Yes, my intention is to buy the ones being used for a canopy as they are not that much pressurised and should not be too hard to push in again when closing the tent.

Not yet, I have been using an aluminium extension pole with a T at the top to push the tent open until now..

I have a HUGE TTT on top of my Metalian Maxi.

It was always a struggle to open the tent.

Took it to Bushwakka in Worcester who did an excellent job in fitting gas struts.

I still use a pole to assist with the lifting but MUCH easier now.

    I would recommend it.

It was custom made by Christies Sports - to fit a king size mattress on top and it has a larger "tent area" at the bottom.

I would think twice before doing this, I have replaced enough aluminum poles due to breakage at the point of drilling holes. You drill a 6mm hole to mount the strut but in the process you take away a lot of the structural strength in the direction of most stress resulting in cracks and eventually breakage. If the frame is steel it should be ok

The idea of the pole with a piece of angle works best in my book. My assistant opens the tents by means of a broom that he wedges in under the first frame and then gentle pressure on the oposite side to slowly inflate the tent. If you have a fly sheet above the tent you can make your life easier by attaching a set of webbing straps to the middle pole on either side and using this to pull up the tent

I did a conversion to my tent on my Off Road Trailer which worked well.

I agree with the comment above and took this into account when I did the mod.

By ensuring the supporting bracket for the strut is at least 50 mm long and shaped to fit half way around the pole where it attaches to the tent pole, the load is spread over that area and thus there is minimal bending in that area.

I sold it 2 years back and the new owner still has joy.

    Cheers
