Default Which compass for my boy

    Good day Guys

I would like to look at buying a compass for my boy.

So I know nothing about compasses, naturally I know the little that was taught at school etc.

But I went to outdoor warehouse, and I was looking at the coghlin and suunto, and I don't know if it was the metal in the shelves or something, but when I compared, but North was all over the place (not literally just a figure of speech).

I highly doubt my boy will need it in a survival situation. But I would like it as accurate as possible and least be able to give him a decent gift.

Can anyone recommend a make / model and something not too crazy over the top in price.

    Thanks

P.s. Is there any tips or advice I can pass on to my boy to protect and preserve the compass and its effectiveness.

Serious question, why you want to buy one for him? Is it just a gift or will he be using it to do races etc? If the former, any will do. Bought my son one years ago and I don't think it left his room. If for these endurance races, then you need to go big.

    Thanks for replying.

He asked for it. So its a gift. My sons 12.

I agree I think it will very much end up just being an ornament. But I would like to buy a semi quality product non the less.

The coghlans one is not bad. I have a similar one bought at trappers to backup my gps when hiking. Doesnt have the scale ruler like the coghlans have though. I noticed that when it is close +- 2m from my guitar amp North is no longer North but outside it works fine.

    "Yes" is the answer.

Why not rather post a pic of a Jeep Compass?

If the compass is just a curiosity for now, maybe the app on a smartphone will suffice assuming he has access to one

Silva compasses used to be very popular, if you can still get them. Ecery Boy Scout used one back in the day!

Either of those two you see there will work fine!

I also had a Silva in scouts and my dads one from when he was in scouts. A good compass will last a lifetime.

Buy him a wrist watch with hour and minute hands, then show him how to use it as a compass as well.

If he has a smartphone you can just download a compass app. No charge . And he always has it with him !
