You can buy a caliper repair kit with new pistons for +- R300 / side.

I paid R275 for the Bearmach kit about a month ago. Includes pistons and seals for both sides.

Took me about 2h30 to do both sides.

Default Re: WANTED thread for Land Rover parts & accessories: 7.50R16 tyres

    Good afternoon guys

I am looking for 4 (or even 2) good used 7.50R16 tyres for my Series 3 - NOT CROSSPLY PLEASE.

I currently have General SAG Crossply tyres on that still have life left in them but I had a flat and fitted the Dunlop Universal spare wheel to the front and even with just one tyre I could feel a massive difference in the ride of the landy.

The crossply tyres cause the old landy to shake and rattle terribly and steering in a straight line is difficult at best of times.

So I would like to try a full set of any 7.50r16 that is not crossply as I am certain that normal tyres would make the old lady drive much smoother with less rattling.

So if you have some gathering dust please let me know I am happy to buy them and collect from you in Gauteng.

    Thank you

Dunlop 235x85 seems your cheapest alternative. But there is not a great comfort increase. Just lower the air pressure in the cross plies. Straight line steering will not improve. You have other problems.

I changed mine to radials but that was because the cross plies are useless in sand.

Don't agree completely. Cross-plies if old and hard will give horrible road holding affects.

235/85-16 radials are the best bet.

I have about 6 tyres scrounged from various benefactors specifically for the same reason as Chrisv: the old bar-tread stuff is rubbish.

I agree Jelo, but one must not expect it to turn it into an S class Merc (not that he mentioned he expected this) The handling will unfortunately still be vague and the ride bumpy. Sorting out the play in the steering relay etc. might be more beneficial.

Apologies for going OT,I know this is a "wanted" thread.

    Hi there Jelo and Serious?

Thank you for your replies !

Without going too much further off topic ... the current SAGs on the landy are very old and cracked and as mentioned I noticed an immediate difference in the straight line steering and ride and thats just one of the front tyres changed. I have tried reducing the pressures but this does not make much difference.

Serious? you are right that the straight line steering is more than just the SAGs and I will have to pay attention to the steering components as well as the suspension bits which probably need some attention.

I really love the character of my series but if I can get a slightly smoother ride and steering by changing the tyres that will be a bonus for me and for the old lady ... no not my wife the landy ;-)

I did think of the 235s but would the extra width not make turning the steering wheel at slow speed even harder than what it currently already is with the 7.50s on ?

Thanks again for the informative replies.

    Cheers

You are right, mine rubbed. I did not want to adjust the stoppers as turning could better be described with "altering course".

The spare on/off the bonnet makes a noticeable change in effort turning, with the tires I did not notice.

    Hi Guys,

Some A-hole stole three or my Defender wheel nuts over the weekend. I did replace the wheel nuts with new ones - the ones with the stainless steel cover over. I'm looking for three "old" style wheel nuts without the stainless cover. To fit on the Deep Dish rims. Willing to swop the new style with the old style if necessary.
