    Default Wind Turbine questions

Sunday i picked up a complete windturbine at the Milnerton flea market.
The blades diameter complete works out to about 1.6m
This morning i tested it with a multimeter and a 27w LED light.
Spinning the hub without the blades i get 16v before it feels like the motor gets braked??
    The Led light works perfectly.
The problem is that the plate with all the info of the turbine is missing.
How can i work out what voltage the turbine is and how many watts it will produce

    1.6 m puts it in a 400-600W class.

But the fan alternator head is normally three phase AC, so does it have the electronics and regulator and controller etc. to give a controlled DC output.

These units are normally permanent magnet alternators. Sometimes the output is three phase AC, sometimes the head has a rectifier set internal and sometimes even a charge controller circuit.

The biggest problem with turbines is how you handle overspeed. Some designs use turbulence to limit overspend, the blades effectively go dirty at some point. Most common is to load the turbine by dumping power into a dummy load. AKA an electrical brake.

Also read that they fit a water heater element to it. When the batteries is charged, it switches over to the element and send all available energy to it.
Still have not figured out the wattage and the volts that this unit produces.

Sakkie, that unit you have there looks more like a 300W single phase slipring unit.
As the load on the turbine increase, so it will resist turning.

    Do you have a bakkie?
Strap it to the back on a pole and get the wife to drive around at different speeds.
Should give you a good idea of the volt output.

Hehehehe...that will be a consternation on the N1..... a Lexus powered Jeep now being powered by a propeller....while trying to establish how many volts it puts out

Seker so 7 of 8 jaar gelede het Walvisbaai Munusipaliteit n 220kW turbine so paar kilos buite die dorp opgesit om n langtermyn studie te doen oor die lewensvatbaarheid van n windplaas.

Koste was daai tyd so 1 miljoen, so vandag seker net oor sie 2 miljoen?
