    Default Mata Mata to Sesriem

    Hi.

Can anyone please guide me to the preferred road between the Mata Mata Border post and Sesriem with reference to good stay over camping spots and maybe any other point of interests in between. I'm planning to do a 3 week trip end June/July and thinking to cover this part of Namibia as well as Damaraland. My initial thoughts was to do Damaraland/Kaokoland but by the looks of it 3 weeks is just too short. I know I'm not going to improve a lot by replacing Kaokoland with this part of the country but at least I'm combining it in my traveling time.

    Thanks
    Nico

    Hi Nico,

I'll gladly assist. From Mata-Mata, how many more days do you have before returning home? Also, what vehicles will you be driving and towing any trailers?

From Sesriem, travel North West on C15 to Gochas, from there West on C18 to Witbooisvlei and from there North West on M29 to Mariental. From Mariental, travel West on C19 to Matlahohe and from there on C14 / C19 via Zarishoogte Pass to Sesriem.

    Hi Sniper.

Many thanks for your traveling advice...

To answer your question. Our unconfirmed itinerary looks something like this:

From Mata Mata to Swakopmund via Sesriem - 4 nights
Swakopmund 2 nights - If weather permits... If not, it will be used elsewhere.
Swakop to Halali - 9 night. (see below)
    Windhoek - 1 night
    Kang - 1 night.

The 9 nights from Swakopmund to Halali include:
    Spitzkoppe - 2 night
    Brandberg - 1 night
    Twyfefontein - 2 night
    Palmwag - 2 nights
    Halalii (or area) 2 nights

There is a lovely campsite Bastion farmyard just out (north) of Mariental, in my opinion one of the best campsites in Namibia, and if arriving from Mata-Mata it is about right place (distance/timewise) to spend the night there. I think they also have some rooms, but I am not sure about that as we were camping there (two years ago).

Thank you Falstaf. 300 Km from Mata Mata sounds like a good stretch for one day to me.

Then, as for the remaining 300 km from Mariental to Sesriem... Looking at Google maps... Any concerns if I hop off the C19 right after Zarishoogte onto the D827 and onto the C27?

We did not drive from Mariental to Sesriem so I cannot give you advice about that part. However, from Mariental to Mata Mata (we went the other way around than you will) we drove to Stampriet first and then turn south to Gochas, this way you have a bit more paved road than going through Witbooisvlei farm. It is easy one day drive, we stopped on the way and were in Mata Mata early enough for an evening game drive.

The Zaris Hoogte Pass (C19 road) is really beautiful. Regrettably, we traveled it in rush to get to Sesriem campsite before they closed for the night, in April, and really missed some great photo opportunities. Spent too long over lunch at Africa Safari Lodge just outside Mariental. It was also an unexpected delight as I'd not heard / read much about it. The altitude drop, if I remember correctly is around 400 meters. If you're into photography, try stay somewhere near this pass to give you the chance to get it in the late afternoon.

As wilfwalk mentioned, there are a couple of scenic roads in the area, the stretch of C27 driving through Namibrand Nature Reserve for me is always special and beautiful!
