    Default Corrupt Police in Lesotho

Andrew St.Pierre White shared this in April 2016 on his Facebook wall, I do not know if it has been shared on the Forum,
    Fabiola Geeven
Lesotho - Just been stopped again 4th road block in 25km. Had to pay R500.00 in each road block and the last one R1000.00 or jail . We did absolutely nothing wrong but every road block we were accused if negligent driving which is a criminal offence. Just left the boarder through Ficksburg and Lesotho will never ever see us again. We have reported it too the tourist board and authorities, but we know nothing will be done about it. So , fellow south Africans beware and do not venture into Lesotho unless you want to get rid if your hard earned sa rands, it really sucks

Same in Moz these days. I hear SADC visitors in ZA get that from our cops as well.

This is very sad if its true!

I am Lesotho often. At least once a month, sometimes every second week.
Yes, they have a lot of roadblocks, 4 in 25km's is very possible. But I have always found the traffic officials to be friendly and helpful. I have never had a single incidence where anybody has tried to solicit a bribe from me, whether I travel solo or in convoy.
I remain positive that Lesotho is a safe place to travel.

Would be interesting to know if this is restricted to only a part of Lesotho, via Caledonspoort seems to be an issue. I will be going through the south east next week, so will see what happens. Obviously keep money separate, to show just how little I do have....

How bad are the police roadblocks if I drive from Underberg to Mokhotlong and back? I do not like police and more particularly corrupt ones.

I have also never had any problems with police in Lesotho.
But, I have only ever experienced anything like that in Mozambique, and there I always managed to get rid of them without a fine or bribe.

Is there possibly a link to the mentioned FB site?
Any sources that can confirm the incidents?

I remember a police checkpoint long time ago in 1999 when my wife and I drove into Lesotho for a day trip. Not far after the border we weer stopped at a roadblock. All the typical african vehicles (some hard to believe they could still drive) were waved through. Our brand new rental car was of course stopped. There were two policemen at the checkpoint. Both were very skinny and were wearing too big uniforms, which made the skinny effect even worse. They really looked like they were wearing their dads uniform and needed a decent meal urgently. They checked everything and tried very hard to find something wrong.

Next to the road, slightly elevated was a big party-tent. In the tent, in the shade, sat a big (fat) black policeman in a white uniform with white gloves. We watched for a while. Every time when the skinny men collected a fine, they would bring the money to the fat man. He would then put it in his pocket. If it wasn't so bad, it would have been funny.
    Regards,
    Hans

Happened to me in Botswana 3 weeks ago. Traffic police demanded P500, eventually accepted P150.

Travelled up Sani, to Mokhotlong, took the A3 to Thaba Tseke, ended up at Katse. From there took the Matebeng pass to Matatiele. Never a cop in sight, so no issues. Just bear in mind that fuel availability can be an issue. Last week in the snow all trucks were apparently told to wait until the snow had cleared.

Just had one incident with a little kid trying to throw a rock as I did not give him food/sweets: saw him picking it up in my rear view mirror. Got out and ran after him, but he got away. Pity: would have loved to cut his ears off " title="Evil" border="">
