Default Martins drift or Stockpoort Border post to Khama Rhino

    Hi
Is it worth it to take a detour to Stockpoort instead of Martins drift border post? It will only make sense if Stockpoort is quieter and the road is about the same quality. First night stop is at Khama Rhino.
    Any recommendations?

Without a doubt use Stockport! Takes all of 15min for formalities....

Went through Martins Drift on both ways recently. We entered Bots on a Sunday, and it took us about 20 minutes. No problems on SA side, but queued for about 10 minutes at Bots side to pay. The return was another story, as it was Friday 13:00 Bots side was quick and painless, but the SA side was terrible. There was no parking, so had to squeeze between trucks and then the queue was about 40m. On closer inspection, and with no surprises , there was 1 person assisting at the window. 1 hour 15 minutes later, we were through.

Based upon your comments, I'm considering taking Stockpoort Border instead of Martins drift.

We'll be leaving from Bakgatla gate (Pilanesberg) and heading to Khama Rhino. I had a prebooked camping spot at The Big Fig Inn camp (Martins drift). But I'm wondering if Stockpoort Lodge wouldn't be a better option.

What's the best way to reach Stockpoort from Pilanesberg and heading to Khama?

And from Stockpoort to Khama Rhino? Do I first drive to Palapye or straight to Serowe?

From Stockport you travel to Mahalapye then onto Palapaye and Serowe. Looks a bit further but it's the quickest!

Went through Stockport on Friday 3rd June around 9:00 am en route to Kasane Total 12 minutes no problems. You travel on a good dirt road for 25 - 30 kms (did not measure) from the border Would reccommend this route on the way up.
Used Martins drift on the way back on Sunday 12 June after overnighting at Kwa nokeng, Around 6:30 am Total time 30 minutes very easy.
One thing I would reccommend when heading to the border from Francistown. Take the route through Selebi Phikwe .New roads all the way and NO TRUCKS Turn off at Serule (80 kms from Francistown)

Martinsdrift is a hit and miss. You could be through quick, or not. Stockpoort will always be quick, guaranteed.

Tony, please elaborate on the new road (from where to where) and the border post. Would that be Zanzibar? If you refer to Martins Drift, could you please give some points along the route. Also, indicate time/travel speed gain. Thanks.

Turned left off the A1 (Francistown - Gaberone highway) at SERULE.Signpost SELEBI PHIKWE aprox 60 kms to the town The road is the original one but has been completely resurfaced with new road signs and markings .Drive towards the mine past the first part of the town When close to the mine you turn right and carry on past the Motels/Hotels and you will see signs for the next town SEFOPHE . again the road has been redone Sefophe is around 30 kms from S Phikwe. Follow the signs at Sefophe to either Zanzibar or Martins drift . A further 90 kms to the Palapye road and the 20 kms via Sherwood to Martins Drift. the distance from Francistown to M Drift is about the same as via Palapye but is a hell of a lot safer and quicker. There were speed traps but it's 120 kph all the way. I have never used Zanzibar border so cannot comment. Hope this helps. Next trip I will use this route on the way up as well.

Nope, you can use Rands too. I have paid in Rands before on the Bots side. Their exchange rate is eye watering though.

Just returned from Bots yesterday, Used Stockpoort going up - When we arrived there, we were the only people going through - Also the most friendly border staff I have ever came across. When we came back yesterday, we decided to go through Martindrift, when we arrived at the Bots side there was no cars or queues - Great this is going to be quick.....

However, arriving at the SA side, it was a different story, well it took 2 hours to get through, reason - There was only ONE agent at immigration .

Lesson learned - I'll only use Stockpoort in the future

    Yep
Returned Saturday and entered 2 weeks ago via Stockpoort. No hassle no checks... just glide through.
Just be aware that the dirt road option to Stockpoort on SA side is not plat kar material.... there is a tarred option detour though. Dirt road on Bots side was 100%, just a lot of animals.......
