Maybe there is some parts like the door pillars you can cut and use on your Beetle, but please try to keep the original body. Even if it takes longer to rebuild. On the long run you will be happier. Oh yes, I saw a oil bath filter on Gumtree. If you are interested I can make a plan to check it out for you and send it down.

I went to have a look at the body yesterday while in Cape Town. Lots of potential, if we had a later model Beetle... But, for us ofvery little value. All fenders and runner boards are solid with the body, iow, not removeable, probably sealed with body filler or fibreglass. The only thing I saw that could really be of use for us is a door handle.

Nico we have a fully functional oil bath airfilter on there... What we are looking for is an oil filter fitting. For now it's not urgent, but if someone happens upon one, please speak to me.

While we're on the needs list. We need one of the air ducting plates on the bottom of the engine (I think left hand side, but will go check and confirm).

Also, if someone stumbles across a 6V starter, please secure it for us. It's something that I feel we should keep a spare for the (hopefully very distant) future.

The filter attachment should look something like this:

There are also other options such as a remote filter attachment. It all depends on the pump cover.

Hahahaa...

Firstly, we are still waiting for the starter, so Buttercup is fairly immobile... and we cannot really dare work on the bodywork in the rainy season (well, we can only hope for rain/snow soon) to the great frustration of Spannerboy.

So, he's keeping himself busy with the handiwork of an over eager, under funded 15 year old! He's fitted a radio (out of an old Tazz), and then decided to light up the interior with some light strips. The green LED strips work on the door switches, but the others on a toggle.

I cannot say that I approve, but, having realised that Buttercup will never be restored to a 'Classic Original Beetle', and having realised that his enthusiasm is worth much more than the Beetle itself... I've made peace with his indiscretions!

On a much sadder note... there is some worse rust than expected. Will have to rebuild some if we cannot find donor parts to transfer or cut and weld.

Eish.... Moenie hom idees gee nie!!

Update: Starter was rebuilt by a local german omie who knows his stuff. But, on refitting, the starter seems to pull heavy amps to turn. Note, I was not anywhere near with this experiment, but this is what I gathered from Spannerboy and Sidekick.

It will have to wait 'til I return from my upcountry conference next week...

I suspect it has an unenclosed bendix. If so and you trust the rebuilder, first check the wiring (earth). If this is good, check the bush in the bellhousing first. It can be nicked/galled if the starter did not go in straight or was forced in.

Otherwise, the bendix can be forced against it by being shimmed out too far and it binds against the bellhousing. Loosen the starter bolts a bit an see if it helps.

Otherwise, the armature can be shimmed too tightly inside. Check its endplay with feeler gauges. Don't know what the specs are but 25-30 thou or point gap size is a good starting point.

2a Jeeps have the same type of setup, hence why I am quite familiar with it all.

    Awesome, thanks!

As I said, I wasn't home when this was fitted, so I have no idea where to start looking. This makes it so much easier to start.
