obviously fuel efficient to a degree , reliability , and comfort.

so far i have looked at these

    2007 freelander 2 i6/td4 +- 150000km on
2008 hyundai tucson 2.0 crd 140000m awd with lock
2005 vw touareg 2.5 tdi r5 auto 160000km with low range and cdl.
    2006 colt 2.8 tdi limited edition 175000km full 4x4
    2011 steed 5 2.4 p 4x4 56000km
    2006 rav4 2.2 d4d 180000km
    2008 ranger dbl cab 160000km 2.5dci

i kknow there is a huge spectrum here but cant decide . want to keep it for as long as it will go . and dont want to spend thousands on parts as all are out of warrenty

any advise will be much appriciated.
Bennett, from my experience, and knowledge.. stay away from the Tucson.
they are nice cars, but loves a petrol station way to much, big downside, its fuel injectors act up often.. it will cost you for the injectors only, about R40k.
if ordered from the agents.. Pirate injectors for some reason don't have a long life span on these cars.

The 2.0 or 2.7v6 petrol version on the other hand have no issues, they go on for ever.. 2.0l no diff lock tho, only downside to them.

I would suggest 2.4 grand vitara.
2nd choice would be freelander 2.

Perhaps first decide between a suv or double cab: my opinion 4x2 with diff lock not 4x4....if suv with high milage and no service history get a petrol, maybe like Tucson or Dodge Journey . If double cab 2.4 Hardbody, 2.4 Triton or 2.4 isuzu in that order . If diesel isuzu 3 d-teq or mazda/ford 2.5 Must have FSH in that order....my2c

My 2000 Ranger 2.5 was serviced yesterday at 240 000 km..all the filters plus the oil was just over R800 and labour R700,I believe in a FSH.My bakkie on this kilos is just as solid as a new one and in 10 years I have replaced the clutch and a little needle bearing on the left front wheel, that is it...o ja my fuel gauge just fell down.So for reliability and cheap parts you will not beat it easily and it can take whatever you throws at it.
