Default What not to do when servicing

I serviced my bakkie this weekend , iv don't it many times , after removing and replacing the oil filter I filled her up , checked for leaks and all was OK , started her up and on came the fuel light , oil all over the floor , the o ring from the old filter stayed behind and i didn't feel it when tightening the new filter on , so always check the old filter to see if the o ring is there .... Stupid mistake but I thought I'd share .... U never know

Same thing happened to me a couple of years ago.
I once forgot to put back the rotor on a old little mazda, man did I battle with that thing until I opened the distributor again.

Once I serviced my 650 GS and that has 2 oil plugs, one below on the sump and one on the reservoir, and I did not close the reservoir tank, so there goes oil all over the show. If that wasn't enough, I cleaned up everything and went and bought more oil and re did the job.

And THEN forgot to close the oil cap and started washing the bike, so water came into the reservoir tank (fortunately I did not start the bike) so off I went to buy more oil to replace the brand new oil that has water in it now.

    So don't feel bad.

Another friend of mine was changing the oil on his D3 V8, and could not get the filter off so he tried the oldest trick in the book to just punch through a screw driver through the filter and twist it off, UNFORTUNATELY on the V8 the inlet and out let pipes of the oil cooler is located just above the oil filter so he punched 2 nice holes through these pipes....

There is always a first time....

I drained the oil out of my Ford Escort (1st year appy) and left the drain plug out so all the old oil could drain out. Changed plugs and filters and forgot to put the drain plug back... 5lt of clean oil straight through the motor into the catch pan under the car....

Many years ago, dropped a small brass screw down a spark plug hole.

My boss (IT Director) serviced his son's Tiida.

He drained the gearbox oil instead of the engine oil.

Happened many years ago. A colleague at work sold his Mini (was a 1000 IIRC ) It had an oil pressure gauge. So the first Saturday she sets of from Rondebosch to Worcester. First stop was near home to fill up with petrol ans also asked for a tin of engine oil to be added. Next stop at the filling station in Du Toits Kloof, asked for another tin of oil. Next stop in Worcester, yes she asked for another tin of oil.

The the attendant told her: Madam the engine is full, the oil is running out.

She thought the Mini had an oil level gauge.

Eish lucky enough I've not done any of those....

Sweeper and I however fitted the inner cv cup the wrong way round on my Isuzu.

That's the nearest I've come to doing something wrong. Apart from overfilling oil that happens offen due to I have never been able to stay in a house with a level drive way.

with me it's been mostly forgetting to plug stuff back.

Had a Jetta 2. Did a service and forgot to plug back the pipe from the tappet cover to the air filter housing. The car didnt idle. Took a while for me to figure it out.

Then things like forgetting to plug the MAF cables back or the throttle wire plug on a drive by wire car.

Some few decades ago servicing our '68 VW Type 3.

All done, checked oil everything in place.

Forgot the tin full of old oil under the vehicle - moved it to one side to get that cover in with the plenty 10mm bolts.

    Started engin, all good.
Shifted into reverse and pulled out, heard a funny noise, stopped looked - nothing, idles fine, rev it all good.

Again reverse and then a sort of dull thud.

Oil tin smashed/flat and a 5-6 meter trail of oil on the floor and paving.
Some loud non repeatable words were uttered
Was the lady of the house happy as she walked out to check the commotion and stepped in to the oil with her nice shoes.

Now days I have check list, oil in place, plug in, spanners packed, etc........

If you do your own servicing and have never forgotten to replace the sump plug, never mind, your turn's coming.

Did a service at night, unbeknown the oil catchment pan plug was not in. Oil flowed down the driveway slope. I went inside for supper whilst draining was happening. Swambo yelled like a banshee, oil from boots on carpet apparently is not a good thing. Cost me a few moolah to have cleaned.

I'm the king of dumb moves - like trying to restart a stalled motor in the Kwaai River with the exhaust under water - but none as dumb as those. Yeah, I know, you don't get any dumber than that Kwaai move.
