Default Freelander 2: Which one to buy?

Hi all, seems as though my wife's trusty FL1 TD4 is going to be too expensive to repair as the reconned injectors are shot, and a new set is very pricey. It has done well over 230 000km, so we have decided to sell it for parts and buy an FL2. Question is which one? Petrol or diesel? It's a work car and she needs the high clearance and 4WD for filming in rough places and carrying film gear. I'm tending towards the petrol engine, as diesel repairs tend to be pretty pricey. Our price range is R150k to R240k, more or less.

Hmm, I've done a bit of web searching and it seems as though the HSE 1.6 tends to be quite a bit cheaper than the same mileage diesels, attractive.

I would buy the diesel as far better fuel consumption as I also had the freelander TD4 before ,my choice

Thanks, very useful stats - I'm just wary of big diesel repair bills if something goes badly wrong. I know the FL2 has a rock solid reputation, but having just been presented with a R36K quote to replace the injectors on our TD4, making it a non-viable option, I am leery of diesel.

Thanks Frans, I love the reputation of the FL2 and the fact that it can go places most softroaders will battle in, plus my Land Rover 110 wants Land Rover company in the garage! I will also look at the Subaru Forester (I think is the one, I am not really a car person) and Mitsubishi Outback, as they both seem to be on a par.

Freelander II td4 SE was by FAR the cheapest to maintain Landy we ever had. Cost nothing except services.
I got about 7.8l/100km with it. My wife has a heavy foot and got around 12l/100km.
Cant go wrong with the diesel. Lots of power. Get aftermarket warranty if you are worried about unexpected costs.

For R240K you should be able to find a nice SD4 in S trim. That's got the best wheel and tyre combination (17") and more than enough luxury, plus a brilliant 140kW 420Nm diesel engine.

Hmm, LR Services have one (2012 model) with 105k km going for about R260k at the moment. They also have our TD4 and will take it off our hands. Perhaps we should grab that one?

I love my "Frikkie" - giving us more than just a means of transport.

Diesel SE with plenty "oemph" - recently back from Zambia - 7 000 kilo's with the Bush Lapa following for 6 000 and with only fuel fill-ups and cleaning the windscreen.

That sounds like it could be a win win. Do try to knock about R20K off that price though, and put it towards an aftermarket warranty. Not that you're likely to need it on a Freelander 2, it one well-made vehicle.

Hi Pieter, when you say diesel SE, is that the TD4?

The FL2 is not without its little gremlins but then no car is.

I have a diesel. Got it for my wife on 68000km, have done 50000km.

Both engines are good but I think the diesel suits the heavy body a bit better. I recently saw a mention in the line of "compared to smaller, lighter crossovers like a freelander") The FL2 is heavier and wider than our fortuner The difference in price may make the petrol a better buy.

Lookout for noisy (cluck-cluck) front control arms and rear shocks. Listen to the power steering. Many freelanders have the PS fluid reservoir clog up causing starving and rack damage (easy fix if the rack isn't damaged yet). Listen for any drive train noise. My rear diff pinion bearing packed up on 100000km. It is normal for the 1st gear on that auto box to whine. They all do it. The tailgate switch will eventually need cleaning or repair if the vehicle lives in wet area. Turbodiesles pop the intercooler pipes after about 150000km. Mine happened on 110000km. Eventually remote batteries will need resoldering, dealers want a small fortune for new ones

Overall, it is a great vehicle to drive. Very, very capable off-road. So the few failures I had I forgive and still love it

Sounds like a nice deal. A large number of gremlins I mentioned ed have been resolved prior to 2012!!!

The TD4 is brilliant, but the SD4 is a revelation. Pulls like there's no tomorrow and uses a lot less fuel.

Careful driving easily yielded over 14km/l from my SD4.

I've also heard that post 2010 Freelanders are better built with far fewer issues.

That is very impressive. Anything bad that we should be looking out for if buying one of them?

What Sergey said above covers most of it. Overall it's a quality vehicle, streets ahead of the FL1 in terms of overall solidity, build quality and fit & finish. It really feels like a junior Range Rover.

Look at the underside for obvious signs of off-road abuse, these Freelanders are (unfortunately, but also delightfully) too brilliant off road for their own good. The brilliant traction sometimes gets you into situations far beyond what the limited clearance allows.

Just to confirm, it is an auto you're looking at, right? I would avoid a manual Freelander 2.

Freelander II must be one of the most underrated and successful cars in its class.

Oops nothing is in its class. Honestly. I cannot think of any car in this class that comes even close in terms of any aspect. Comfort, reliability, off road capability, economy, performance, reliability, well just about everything.

Back to the original question. Its not quite fair to compare them. Two different generations.

But if I have to. The TD4 feels more punchy, kinda like untamed wild horses. The SD4 more effortless and refined.

And yes, I have driven both - Extensively.
