oradba69, I like that idea! you can even then add a tilt mechanism to maximize your angle to the sun (only used when camping off-course )

BruceT, very true. the above should cover that as well

I'm seeing another connect-it use coming to mind!

I had 2 x 80w glass panels fitted in aluminium mounting frame (http://www.bushpower.co.za/products.asp?pc=13) before , had it fitted on the roof rack
It works perfectly except it was heavy to install it when needed , the vehicle have always be to be in the sun when charging is needed when stationary and about nothing else could be loaded on the roof rack

I have now a few of 100w flexi panels (think it same as Stranger, also got it from forum member ) and it works satisfactory for my needs as it is much lighter and less bulky

My point about the shade, panels fixed to the vehicle needs to be in the sun, so you now get a hot fridge competing against your consumption.
Lusted for a Landy but the Pajero was sexier and bigger in the right departments, just like my Missus.

I like the idea of a loose frame over the tent. With a good design, it will make the putting on and taking off quick. and you then also have the option of maybe using the frame to carry a small kiddies bike etc. one day when the solar is not used for that trip.
Will also be easier to make it theft proof with a frame

Depending how your trailer look, one can even make this frame swivel to create a kind of awning.

Why not just charge from the car?

If you don't want to change the cars system it can work. Build a sturdy frame and strap it to the top of the tent.

What about a geyser drip tray to fix the panel in , made of plastic sturdy an cheap.
Strap it to the tent with the straps of the tent cover.

Simply, just to keep the panel cooler when stationary? Cooler panels generate more power than hotter panels.

But I think the difference would be hardly noticeable.

We store our panel between the TTT and the trailer.
Just require brackets to lift TTT and a envelope made from 3 ply where the 130 W panel fits in.
Four RED BH plugs and 10m lead to connect the panel to the trailer.
Tried the panel on top of the TTT, it moves on bumpy roads - require some sturdy way of keeping it properly attached.

Using the NL solenoid to charge while driving, does not charge the battery fully but keeps it going while traveling.

I'm busy building a roofrack and solar panel frame in one that will fold over my rooftop when it is fold up , when fold up the panels will be underneath and roofrack on top , when camping it will fold over to the towbar side with the panels on top and be able to turn it to always face the sun. I will be finished in about two weeks and will then post pictures for feedback and idees from everybody.

I attach a pic of the roof rack that Echo added to their trailers from Nampo. It loosens in the middle and the one half flips to the front and the other half to the back

How high would that roof rack and items be, think trees and some low items will come in to play.

Anybody completed their solution, another chap is also looking for a PV storage area.
He is considering the lift of the TTT, similar to my one.

My TTT is level with the roof of the bakkie.
Not putting anything higher than 300 mm above the roof, got hit once not again.
