Default Urgent Advice Needed on Softroader purchase

    Hi

Am brand new to the 4x4 community. Always looked at your forum as a guest but now a member . I am in the market to purchase a softroader and have narrowed it down to a Subaru Forester X 2013. Prospective vehicle is immaculate but sadly out of warranty . Has 71000kms on the clock with FSH and purchasing from a dealer. I needed to know if there are any issues or tech faults with this type of vehicle as I am fairly new to the offraod scene. No serious offroading will be done apart from trips to Drakensberg as we are a family of serious hikers. The vehicle choice is also that my wife can use it as a daily drivers vehicle. Any info or advice will be appreciated.

    Hi Torqkie

Welcome. The forester is a great car. 2013 model means no expensive timing belt service as it's chain driven. I've only had one service done so far and it was ok on cost. We'll see with the next one.

Is it the manual or the auto you're looking at? The 4 spd auto is old....but you get use to it. Other than that it's a good solid car that does very very well on dirt roads. Also does well on sand. Open road I got it down to 8.2l/100km....once....mostly I average between 8.8 and 9.2l per 100km. Town driving I get between 10 and 11l per 100km.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask if you need more info.

Sounds good to me. If the condition is okay you don't have much to loose.
Beware though, when you know what that one can do you will want to go further off the beaten track.

Thanks guys for the positive feedback. @MThompson: its a cvt and am comfortable driving it albeit moderate speeds on tar. I have offered an extended warranty so will definitely be purchasing that. @haboob I know that once the off road bug bites its terminal...lol but i will be replacing my platkar for a more serious 4x4 d/c soon. Dealer is a great family friend and has indicated that the motor was well kept.
